DIY Speaker Upgrade?
If you plan to get some other speakers to listen to, you can use these old ones to experement with. It can be interesting and relatively inexpensive, but will take time.Keep one speaker stock, and work on the other one. This cuts costs in half, an...
LP shelf recommendations?
The most convenient storage is "almost on edge" slanting back at an angle of about 30 degrees to the vertical. I built a storage box like this, with multiple sections each holding a group of a couple of dozen records. The sections were larger than...
Recomendation for speakers BEST for Piano?
Frogman...Since a real piano can be perfectly reproduced (Ritteri told me so) there should be no problem making a perfect synthesized one. Right? :)
What causes clipping?
Robotman...The "drivers" are the things with cones that move in and out. Since your SW has a built-in amp I guess that you can't get at the amp output wires that go to the drivers. If you could get at those wires, a 9 volt battery momentarily conn...
Digital as good or better than YOUR analog?
What does "better" mean? For me I was always annoyed by LP surface noise and rumble, and the inconvenience of constanly cleaning away dust. Therefore, for me, CD's were an improvement from day one.Today my digital playback equipment is considerabl...
Denon DVD and Receiver
There is no reason why the volume level when playing a DVD should be exactly the same as other sources. For one thing, the volume level will depend on how the disc was recorded. A disc might be recoreded "softly" so as to leave room (with the avai...

Opinions on stereo subs v. a single mono sub?
With LP source, deep bass is monophonic. Records are made this way because strong vertiucal groove modulation tends to make the stylus hop out of the groove. Also rumble filters often reject the differential signal (vertical) because that is what ...
Placement of Magnepan 1.6's or 3.6's
Of course you should audition both the 1.6 and the 3.6. Not everyone prefers the ribbon tweeter. I picked the 1.6 over the 3.6, and price was not the reason.
What causes clipping?
If these SW are acoustic suspension (sealed box..no vent) your box might have a leak. Tighten all the mounting screws on the drivers. Check for any other source of leakage.Test the polarity of the drivers by touching the speaker wires to a battery...
Fine speed adjustment on Empire 698 ?
I had an Empire 598 turntable for many years, and the speed adjustment method (like that described by Kr4) was satisfactory.
Best 5 Channel Amp for $2k?
Three Carver ZR1000 (and you get one extra channel thrown in free).
Looking for a guide to best classical recordings
"Best" will vary from one person to another. Is a scratchy old recording of a violin concerto played by Fritz Kreisler better than a state of the art SACD by Hilary Hahn? Opinions differ. You should buy a few recommended recordings, and keep track...
How to audition subwoofer?
I like the idea of putting a SW behind each main speaker. I think this provides the best "seamless" integration. In particular I have my Maggies set up this way with dual driver subwoofer systems installed in the wall behind each of three Maggies....
