Maggie 3.6R performance dilemma..
Rooze...I think we really need to find out how loud is loud. You need to do one of two things. (1) Get a sound level meter and determine how many dB we are talking about. (2) Have your hearing checked. (Don't feel bad about this. Beethoven was deaf...
Rate these on order of importance:
1...The signal. a. The disc or LP being played. (The ultimate limit on quality). b. The playback equipment, disc player or turntable and pickup. (How well the disc's potential is realized).2...The speakers. a. Type of speaker (planar, box, etc) , ...
Gilmore Audio planars revealed
Reminds me of a computer manufacturer quite a few years ago, who photographed their product on a mountan top with a scantily-clad babe. This apperared in their magazine ads. However, there was another version of the photo, with limited distributio...
Does tubed gear make your speakers hum/buzz?
Tubes hiss. I don't know any solution for that.Regarding Hum...It is possible to make a tube preamp that has no hum (well almost). My first preamp was a Heathkit (which I understand was basically a Fisher design). It was quite difficult to build b...
How to keep my stack of Adcoms cool...
Actually, I have always wondered why some high end outfit didn't come up with a water-cooled audio power amp. Advantages would include precise regulation of operating temperature (an advantage of water-cooled engines over liquid-cooled). However, ...
blowing maggie fuses on Mingus.
Pardon me, but how will a subwoofer reduce tweeter power?
How to keep my stack of Adcoms cool...
If you are able to do things in the cellar, put the amps down there. This would be easier and better than ductwork. Run the speaker wires down there also.

sean...Your speaker placement procedure is pretty much what I have used for years, and is just common sense. But, you forgot the final step! Mark the speaker positions somehow (tape works) so that you won't have to go through the whole routine eve...
Maggie 3.6R performance dilemma..
Roose...Seems like most people think you room is too big, and/or you need different speakers. Perhaps they are right, although my view is otherwise. Just one final suggestion...don't give up the ship without at least actually trying a powerful (no...
Modified Adcom 5400 or Stock 5500?
I use the 5503 (3-channel version of the 5500) with MG1.6 that are crossed over from subwoofers at 90 Hz. Results are excellent. The difference vs a well-regarded low power Adcom amp with similar specs (100 watts vs 350 watts at 4 ohms) is dramati...
Maggie 3.6R performance dilemma..
And I say again...GET MORE WATTS. Just as an experiment, try an Adcom amp,5500, 350 watts into 4 ohms. Use that as a basis for comparison with multikilobuck amps. You may be surprised.
New system too bright. Will different cables help ?
That's why tone controls were invented.
Paper Cones in HiFi?
Those who look inside high end speakers are often surprised by what they see. Not only are the cones sometimes paper, but the entire driver may be elcheapo. Wires too. I hasten to add that not every manufacturer is like this, but more than you wou...
People who are Irrationally Afraid of tube amps
Tubegroover...I agree that "piano as a litmus test" is good, but I have never heard a recorded piano that sounds exactly right (and I know what it should sound like because we have a Steinway grand piano in the house). Do you have any suggestion a...
People who are Irrationally Afraid of tube amps
Johnk...It has long been recognized that the fact that tube amplifiers characteristly produce even harmonics, and that even harmonics are typically part of musical instrument sounds, makes their distortion relatively unobjectionable. A violin, for...
