Good Classical discs for "beginners"
An interesting feature of classical music is that you can find many recordings of some of the great pieces, and compare the style of various performers. The variation of interpretations is remarkable, and I am talking of performances which all are...
Why Linear Tracking never took off?
Henkaudio...The servo system that moves the arm pivot assembly quickly along the track, lowers the arm at the outer groove and picks it up when the record is finished is separate from the system that controls movement during play. I don't think th...
Why Linear Tracking never took off?
I also have the Sony PSX-800 with linear tracking biotracer arm, and find that it performs flawlessly. For example, it will play records so badly warped that an ordinary arm gets tossed completely out of the groove. The reason that I bought it was ...
Worthwhile $5 Tweak
Grounding...The basic rule is:For analog circuits...single point ground. Do the preamp, and let everything else get grounded via their connections to the preamp. For digital circuits....ground as many places as practical. Sometimes shields are best...
SACD a 5.1 medium?
Kr4...What makes you think that the Master recording was stereo? The Master is usually a dozen or more channels, so even the 5 channel version is a mixDOWN.There are a good many SACD available which are not multichannel. In a multichannel SACD the...
Point to Point Wiring
In a tube amp, the sockets provide most of the "points" that need wires. So point-to-point makes sense.
Maggie 1.6QR versus "high-end" monitors.
I have a newly aquired set of three MG1.6, having returned to the Maggie fold after a few years in the wilderness. I have long used a center channel because my room layout would put stereo speakers too far apart, but the third speaker also permits...
Active vs. Passive Step-Up Devices
Wellfed...The Signet transformer that I once used was about the size of a beer can. Lot's of luck getting it inside a preamp!
Power cord? Why?
Corona...What I milled down was a 3/4 inch length of twisted-together and soldered triad of #20. I would guess this was about #6 in diameter. About 1/2 inch of this I milled down so it would just barely fit into my heavy duty connector...about #10...
hifi as investment?
If it's anything like other investments you stand to loose a lot of money. It's been said about investment in fine art.."don't buy it if you wouldn't enjoy hanging it on your wall forever". Same for audio equipment.
Does bewiring decrease "wholeness" ?
I have been a sceptic about bi-wire hookup, except for the fact that you probably end up with more copper (lower resistance). I have never heard any technical explanation of why bi-wire is better...just the usual "trust me it sounds better".Howeve...
Power cord? Why?
sean...When twisted together three #12 conductors were obviously too big to fit even a heavy duty connector. No problem. I soldered the twisted triad together, and then milled it down with a grinder so as to just barely fit the connector.
Opinions: Marantz DV-12S1 vs Pioneer Elite 45a
The DV45A and the DV47A use the same AUDIO D/As...192KHz/24 bit...three of them. The 47A VIDEO D/A is 108MHz/12 bit...whereas the 45A is 54MHz/10 bit. If your main interest is audio, the 45A is obviously the sensible choice. The 47A would theoreti...
Tuners and Antennas
FM tuners will "capture" a signal that is above a very low threshold (with modern tuners), and as long as your signal is above that capture level a stronger signal (less gain loss) doesn't matter. A splitter incurs a gain loss, but S/N ratio is un...
optical or coaxial audio cable?
Nrenter...I have not compared the 2-CH analog input against the MULTI input (also analog). I would take ROTEL's word that it's the same signal. Of course if you use the MULTI input you forgo any capability for matrix multichannel playback of the s...
