Do I need a sut?
Depends on the gain calculator you want to use. ;)In multiple systems over the years, I've found the KAB calculator to be pretty much dead on and it suggests a phono gain of 76 dB for a .05 mV cartridge. FWIW, using line level gain in the calculat...
Do I need a sut?
http://www.ebay.es/itm/332504231804?rmvSB=true Not sure of the overall quality of the specific transformer, but a reasonable price and should be an almost ideal match in terms of gain (28 dB) along with the 48 dB from the Herron MM input.
Why are the vocals on some records hidden behind the music on my system?
Kudos to Williewonka for pointing out the precision setup which is required for that stylus. I had one on a rebodied Denon 103R here and it is indeed a bit*h to setup; it is by far the most demanding stylus out there to set up IMO and extremely sm...
Why are the vocals on some records hidden behind the music on my system?
czarivey nailed it as far as I'm concerned. Assuming everything is connected properly and the MM input is functional, gain is approximately 35 dB on the MM input which is considerably light for a 2.1 mV cartridge, which would probably be optimized...
How to pick a COMPATIBLE phono cartridge
" One last question: If a system can accommodate both medium and high output versions of a cartridge, why choose medium (i.e., why choose a lower output version)? What do lower output cartridges do better than higher? Thinking that's the case..."...
How to pick a COMPATIBLE phono cartridge
KAB calculator that jls001 linked to above is very helpful. Unless you are running a very unusual system (passive pre-amplfier, flea type amplifiers with extreme hi-efficiency speakers, etc.), I think you will find it will give you a very accurate...
Mint LP Help
I have a Mint myself but find the linked to instructions for an arc protractor to be a bit better than Yip's, although I do like his protractors very much. http://db.audioasylum.com/mhtml/m.html?forum=vinyl&n=738382&highlight=arc+protracto...
Denon 103R load settings w/Moon LP5.3
The closer you can get to 60 dB in my opinion the better you will be, so I would definitely try the 54dB setting with the balanced outs if that achieves a total of 60 dB from the phono stage. I used modifed 103R's for about 6-7 years and, in my sy...
Denon 103R load settings w/Moon LP5.3
Resistance: 100 ohms (you could also try 470-if you prefer that go with it.)Capacitance: should be unimportant. I'd set it to 0Gain: 60 dB
THE LITTLE BLACK BOX, 399.00 ABSOLUTLY NUTS
Autospec: Not sure if you are aware of this but if you're Rega 700 has the stock wiring in it, you will need to do some minor surgery (or have it rewired) to configure it for balanced. Rega is one of the very few arm manufacturers whose arms are n...
On Step Ups and the Importance of Managing Gain
Pretty sure that balanced  topology is not required with a current mode phono pre; the Nibiru, and I believe other current mode phono preamps in existence before the Aqvox were all single ended. I believe the Aqvox was the first to combine both.Th...
On Step Ups and the Importance of Managing Gain
They’ve been around for quite some time Lew. I’ve owned my Aqvox for at least 10 years now and TNT reviewed the Nibiru about 5 years before that. A few others I think as well were around in that time period. Technically I really do not have a clea...
Is tonearm cable the most important cable in the system ?
It's an interesting question. All cabling is important obviously, but the tonearm cable is probably the one in my system where the differences in sound quality seem to be more extreme and easier to hear as opposed to speaker cabling, IC's or power...
Turntable getting back to vinyl
At the lower price points best to look in the used market for mid 70's to early 80's workhorse tables that can often be had for reasonable prices in decent shape. If you're not confident in looking for yourself, perhaps you could enlist the help o...
Cartridge options for current gain phonostages (47 Labs)
Yes, I had a bit of trouble getting my head wrapped around it as well. But there was a notable difference, namely that in parallel, the sound seemed to be rolled off in the highs, slightly muffled and slightly less open/detailed and dynamic than w...
