Poor recordings that are now great.
I see. IME amps have always been the trickiest to get right in a system. Maybe that's made worse by that fact that there seems to be such slim pickings for them these days. It seems easier by far to get revved up about some really good preamp cand...

"Your final conclusion of using good, bad and middle of the road recordings to evaluate gear lends credence to my initial assertion, does it not? In any case, top notch gear has not had much of an influence in moving past that 'barrier' until now"...

None of this may be new, but it seems to me that no matter how much gear swapping or modifying you've done to a system, you still may yet do something that ends up more than superficially changing your own subjective 'evaluation' of a given record...
Remember the year and first vynil you ever bought?
Sgt. Pepper's in the summer of '67, which actually my 4-year-older brother bought for himself when I was 7. Whenever he was listening to it I knew it to be a recording I wanted to get into - but, he wouldn't let his little-kid brother in on his li...
Are some of us losing our minds over upgrades??
I ought to clarify my post above. I myself buy with the intent to hold onto my gear, but acknowledge that others may consider resale value ahead of that. So when I say: 'investment', what I really mean and should've said above is the "investment i...
Are some of us losing our minds over upgrades??
The Sony 5400ES is well recognized by modders as being a mod-friendly design. No problem with that. But, my own 2 cents is that value-oriented, or bang-for-the-buck, modding makes good enough sense to me and certainly has its place. Thing is, the ...
Jean-Luc Ponty
I'm a big Ponty fan. Cosmic Messenger is one of my faves. Also: Enigmatic Ocean, Mystical Adventures and A Taste For Passion. The Rite of Srings (with Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke) is good too. But, you're right, those are all actually well-engi...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
Come to think of it, Alan says that flat-panel TV's are likely the single noisiest appliance found in the home, nowadays. But, no wonder if maybe introductory vinyl- or digital-based systems are not turning on quite as many people as they used to....
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
At least one technical explanation has occurred to me as to why the number 'true' audiophiles has recently declined - despite the fact that most gear quality continues to improve. Over the last 5 years I'd begun investigating the whole topic of po...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
Mapman: :) My parents had a Gerrard console that was built-in to a living room cabinet. Not the greatest fidelity, by any stretch, but it was STEREO - something rather rare among anyone I knew in the early 60's. I was turning 5 at the time and I s...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
I'd venture to guess that (due to the whole 'cost-vs-complexity' thing) we're almost 'forced' to keep it a secret. I mean people tend to get different results with different systems anyway. Heck, even experienced audiophiles can often end up disag...
Where does your user name come from?
My last name "Robinson" spelled backwards is "Nosnibor"...which sounded vaguely Russian to me. First name is John, and John, in Russian, is "Ivan".
New tv?
For my money, nothing beats a Plasma...still. Last Christmas we snapped up a 60" LG on sale for $800. It retailed for $1400 and usually sold at $900 in stores and online. It was one of LG's cheaper 60" Plasmas. The upper-end picture response resol...
What Product Did You Overspend On?
Technically this would qualify as an overspend since I paid a lot more than retail. It was Dec, 1990 and I had been looking for a pair of 3-way towers that I knew I could live with for at least the next decade and hopefully much longer for $2000 o...
How much does your system retail for?
About $12.5k right now and even that has been largely spread out over the last 23 years, so it hasn't hurt me too bad really. May add another $1-1.5k before all is said and done. The weird part is that the 2.0-channel rig of just the components th...
