Dark Side of the Moon 30th Anniv Album
There's an interesting analysis on the Stereophile web site that compares the CD layer versus the SACD layer. JA's measurements suggest that the CD layer was compressed and the dynamics were often clipped. Not so the SACD. The observation was that...
No Dustcover for Turntable, What do You do?
WWW.elusivedisc.com lists a number of dustcovers for the VPI Aries series. There is a Scout Table Top ($200) version that fits over the whole thing and sits on the table -- presumably this may be inappropriate for your shelf location. There is a S...
Does the subwoofer have to be on the floor?
Some subwoofers are designed to be placed close to the floor so that floor reflections can reinforce their volume. I suppose you could adjust the volume control to compensate.A proper location for the subwoofer would minimize excitation of room re...
Best small speaker
I like the Proac 1SC. It does a good job on the mids and the highs and goes to the mid-upper bass on the low end. I would supplement it with a good powered subwoofer, something you might want for most small speakers anyhow. Good luck.
Japanese Jazz Musicians
Many of these musicians appear on albums recorded via the Three Blind Mice label re-released by JVC. Some albums are currently available at www.elusivedisc.com (just do a search on the artists' names or Three Blind Mice). Sugano's "Love Is a Many ...
+++Magnum Dynalab MD-208 Reciever+++
I have a 208, but I have never owned a NAD receiver. The 208 does a pretty good job pulling in FM stations, probably better than most, although such differences are easily overwhelmed by antenna decisions. The amp section is credible driving my pa...
Ground loop hum
I had a hum that came from a light dimmer switch installed in the wall. When I flipped the switch, the hum would go away for a while.I also had a hum when using the VPI PLC to power my turntable. It broadcasts a lot of hum. You don't describe your...
Newbie ?'s
I've always liked Steely Dan's Aja, Blood Sweat & Tears' self titled album, and Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon (recently re-released as a CD/SACD hybrid) for good sound. Of course, they've done a good job remastering the Stones' albums in ...
VPI Magic Brick or Webster's Dictionary
I have two Sunfire subwoofers stacked. They are not magnetically shielded, and I have been concerned about magnetic interaction in stacked configuration. Putting some steel in between the subs would make sense theoretically, to channel the fields ...
Theil 3.5's...Tubes or SS? Just bought a used pair
I have a pair of 3.6s and have had good results driving them with solid state amps of 100 watts per channel or more. The 3.6s (and 3.5s, I believe) are difficult to drive with an impedance curve that dips below 3 ohms at points. I understand that ...
Any recomendation fro balanced phono stage?
Pass Labs' current model is the Xono with signal path electronics in one box and power supply in another. It's got some favorable reviews and is quite flexible in loading and gain settings. The prior model is the Aleph Ono, which is a one box desi...
VPI SDS question
The SDS will do a better job of providing a proper waveform of AC power to your turntable motor than the Monster AC filter. This helps assure smooth torque from the motor, which could reduce flutter even though you do have a fairly massive platter...
VPI SDS vs PLC
I have both. As Bob mentioned, the PLC is electrically noisy and must be located carefully away from your signal path. The SDS doesn't have this problem. The PLC is a more primitive design with analog control knobs, while the SDS has push buttons ...
Which stands are recommended for ProAC 1SC speaker
I had my 1SCs on Target R1 stands, filled with sand from Home Depot. They were such a good match that I felt the R1s were designed for the 1SCs. I had little dabs of Blue Tac squeezed in between to prevent any accidental sliding. My interconnects ...
How hot do a pair of Pass Labs X600 amps run ?
Think about a block of metal that's 19x12x22 inches that is hot to the touch but not so hot that you couldn't keep your hand on it. This is in your room radiating heat. For a typical listening room, this isn't terrible. Then there would be two for...
