best solid state integrated to match with B&W 685s
Thanks Bob.I listened carefully to one of the new NAD amps set up well yesterday, and came away impressed. Now thinking the combination of the C-326BEE with the 685's would sound great in a small room. Actively, crossed over as recommended by Bob ...
Ortofon X1-MC
Thanks Bob, yes Needle Doctor price tweaked my interest. Jjorqueram's assessment of X-1 sounds like it isn't going to provide significant improvement from Grado Blue I am currently using, which is reasonably detailed but lacking magic with this ar...
NAD, and Vandersteen
Late to this party, but I had an interesting experience yesterday. I was demoing some Vandersteen 1C's and one set up was the NAD C-565BEE CD player mated with the NAD C-315BEE integrated - 40W and $350. This was a remarkably musical system. Unbel...

"One possible system, is a Benchmark DAC1 sourcing active speakers."This is an interesting idea. Bob, how would you configure a subwoofer in this set up?
best solid state integrated to match with B&W 685s
Realremo,If a choice is to be made, I am a believer in putting more money in the front end (source and pre/amp) due to GIGO considerations. In reality, most people building systems over time see-saw between improving quality of speakers, amp and s...
HDMI vs analog
Yes, try it both ways. Specifications mean almost nothing in this case. Lots going on in the receiver (like amplification that can interfere with effective DA conversion) that is not going on in the BluRay Player.
Anyone using a Blu-Ray player as a transport?
It would be a downgrade.

The older Naim's were more restricted in the type of wires they could accomodate. The current Naim Nait 5i, Nait XS and SUPERNAIT integrates all accommodate RCA jacks and multiple types of speaker cable. The XS and SUPERNAIT also have subwoofer ou...

Loose,FYI, I have a Cambridge 640C v2 CDP and it works very well. It is "alive" and detailed sounding with solid bass, good instrument placement, but not the widest sound stage ever. I am running it with an older modified AMC amp and custom built ...

Loose,Interestingly and not surprisingly, the advice so far is all over the map. I am usually a source-first guy, but thinking in this case your older amp may be the greatest factor. New budget CD players from Cambridge, Music Hall and NAD are get...

Two ideas:1) go to The Cable Company http://www.thecableco.com/ and tell them what system you are using and whatever you think is a reasonable budget for interconnects and speaker wires. Ask to borrow at least two sets of each and try them for an ...
Amp rec needed for Quad 21l2
I think they would work well together, but haven't heard that combination so can't say for sure.

I would go listen to the Naim and the Cambridge too if possible... REALLY. The reason they are not listed in Stereophile's recommended list is that they have either not reviewed them (Cambridge) or not in a very long while (Naim Nait-1985, at leas...

I would consider getting a higher quality integrated rather than fooling with separates in this price range. Look at these:Exposure 2010SCambridge Audio Azur 840A v2Naim Nait 5iNAD C-375BEERega Mira 3Peachtree Audio Novaor the new Rotel. These amps...
