When to recap?
Former McIntosh repair tech, here.Another clue; swollen tops of the electrolytics (can-type caps), and look for any dark liquid seepage from around the bases of the capacitors (some mfrs like NAD used a dark glue to help secure the cans, not McInt...

Question about shipping damage
As a former US Service manager for two EU HiFi Brands, we American employees were astonished by the feedback from EU every time we requested heavier, better packing for our multi-thousand dollar amps. Our amps were constantly damaged in shipping i...
Can a tiny silver bowl affect music reproduction
The tiny silver-colored metal bowl that plugs into the side of my bong makes a HUGE difference in sound when used properly
McIntosh C26 - 1st to totally stump me in 37 years
Old McIntosh units used rivets for grounding lugs, and willing to bet one or more of those has been compromised during the re-capping. I have an old 'cattle prod' heavy duty soldering iron and acid flux from plumbing supply that I use to solder th...
What about 845 tubes on Wilson Sophia 3...?
Hi there,Wilson has at least one pair of Nagra VPA 845 Class A P-P amps (50WPC) in their evaluation room, so an 845 amp would be a match made in heaven.(Disclosure: was Nagra's US service eng. And we always had Wilson's at CES hooked to our VPA's....

Bass leaves after amp warms up?
I may have missed it among the 140+ responses, but did anyone suggest you run an extension cord from another part of the home to the amp? Perhaps the circuit breaker or the wiring/panel/outlet has a resistance and after an hour of high current fro...

Former dCS Service tech here. The controller board with all the regulators and the Ring DAC board (running at Class A) both give off a bit of heat. Completely normal for the Puccini Player to warm the CD.
Why can you buy a car at dealer Invoice but audio
The EU high end brands I was US Service manager for were set in stone as to the price dealers could sell for. They immediately terminated any dealer that sold below that price. For better or worse, that was the high end of just a few years ago.
Mcintosh MC2105
Remove bottom cover, and the 1/4 inch hex bolts are visible at either end of the mesh cover(s). While in there, you may as well touch up solder joints under EVERY Molex connector that is PC board mounted. (very common failure in a 35+ year old uni...
No Balanced Circuitry
Very common for manufacturers to employ balanced connections at the inputs or outputs of unbalanced circuitry. Especially seen in pro gear, use of IC or transformer balancing (vs. truly differential balancing: doubling of circuitry and the inheren...
How to remove McIntosh glass faceplate?
Factory Authorized McIntosh tech, and the service manuals have ZERO disassembly instructions. In fact I broke a few faceplates at first.Good news, McIntosh has been remaking new glass faceplates for their vintage units for years, and they usually ...
MX 110 Troubleshooting
Clean the pots and switches, especially the volume pot. My vintage gear has your exact symptoms when they need cleaning. With power OFF, spray pots and switches with NON residue electronic contact cleaner and exercise the switches and knobs for se...
Sansui 9090db vs Mcintosh 1900
I concur: plus the Mac 1900 is nearly sublime if used within its power range, closer to 70wpc vs its stated 55wpc. I have had my MAC1900 for 10 years and love its sonics and its way with Nashville's classical FM station: never knew FM sounded so g...
