speaker cone doping?
The AR's are an acoustic suspension design which uses very compliant woofers that have a cloth surround. The cloth was doped to maintain the acoustic seal. Sometimes the sealant fails over time and develops pinholes which allows for excessive cone...
Who believes that Robert Plant
Not me!
The Biggest Album Release of All Time...
Not only is it free to download, it was loaded onto my iPhone without my knowledge. I didn't know about it until this morning when a friend at work mentioned it was downloaded (uploaded??) onto his iPhone. I checked mine and, sure enough, it was t...
Tannoy/Micro TM55DD turntable
This turntable is probably a Micro Seiki rebadged for Tannoy. Check out: vinylengine.com for a possible match. Micro Seiki had some "DD" model numbers which leads me to believe you will find a match there.
Rockwell: audiophile term "just like a pedophile"
According to Kenny, we don't really like music because we're too obsessed with the equipment which, ironically, HE REVIEWS!! His website includes a plea to help support his family, which reads in part:"I support my growing family through this webs...
Returned to Albums/ Vinyl after 30 years
Like Mceljo says, don't overlook used. There are some real bargains out there, especially the more common titles. Used record stores or record shows, where you can inspect the record before buying, is the best way to be sure you're getting a good ...
Your last concert was to see who and when?
Joe Robinson at the University of Akron's Wayne College in Orrville, Ohio on March 16, 2013. He's a "boy wonder" guitarist from Australia who is absolutely phenomenal. If you get a chance to see him play, I would highly recommend it.
Quiet"er" record cleaner?
I use the Spin Clean and then vacuum them with the KAB EV1 from kabusa.com ($169). It is basically the top portion of a manual Nitty Gritty machine. I am very satisfied with this combination. The EV1 uses your own vacuum cleaner so, as Czarivey sa...
Cleaning melted plastic from MC275 chrome surface
Acetone is very aggressive on styrofoam and will melt it. How it will work on burnt styrofoam is anyone's guess. Be careful, though. It is very aggressive on other surfaces also. Acetone is the active ingredient in nail polish remover.
Tool for measuring pivot to spindle distance?
If you don't know the pivot to spindle distance, look up your tonearm spec's on vinylengine.com and use that figure. Then do what Brf says. Be sure to read the "README" for the Conrad Hoffman download.
CD Players: Stop breaking down
Add me to the list of dissatisfied Cambridge 640-C owners. Mine bit the dust after 4 years of moderate use. One thing I hated about it was the buttons. I always had to hit them extra hard and/or multiple times to get the player to start. Very aggr...
What to do with old Thiel CS-2s
Trying to replace the drivers with randomly chosen same-sized drivers would produce horrible results. Speakers have many different operating parameters that must all be right to work correctly for a particular design. Your chances of buying even a...
best recorded 78rpm to look for, also cartridge...
The speeds of these old records actually varied somewhat. At some point they were standardized at 78, so having variable speed capability on your turntable for the earlier records is desirable. There also wasn't a standard equalization curve at th...
World's largest vinyl record
And the record is spinning at....17 miles per hour....WHAT?
Should I have a separate bank account for PayPal?
I always use a credit card for Paypal purchases and, in at least one case, it saved me a lot of grief (and I actually MADE money!). I was one of about 30 people who purchased custom-built tube amplifiers from a seller on that auction site who was ...
