Which is more important?
I lived in a city that had an army base once and the local pawnshops usually had good selections of audio equipment. When someone was transferred out, they sold their stuff that would then get bought by guys(and women) who transferred in. It seems ...
Low-Fi Experience
NAD markets(or used to) a receiver/cd player box with a pair of PSB speakers that is not half bad for the money for rooms the size of dorm rooms.I've heard worse.
Best speaker value
Let me pile on another recommendation to listen to the Maggie 1.6 qr s. If you find you prefer box speakers, consider the Madisound "Original" Odins at a thousand dollars. I have not heard the Thors but would like to.
Naxos CDs with Great Sound
I can honestly say I have never heard a bad CD from the Naxos label. I've heard some whose subjective interpretations I disagree with, but that is my problem. My personal favorites are the set of 15 string quartets by Haydn and the Chopin Preludes....
Can speakers be too good?
Your post indicates that you will not make the mistake of selecting speakers that don't match your electronics physically. At the risk of being glib,as you are a musician,as you know your budget and we do not, listen to speakers till you find a pai...
Magnepan MMG........amazing
(smile)...ok,you are running a good amp. You'll like 'em more in a month than you do now.
Magnepan MMG
I had a pair of MMG's and went to the 1.6s. The cliche about Maggies being placement sensitive is true. I'm agnostic about the cliche concerning their power hunger(at least at classical and jazz amplitudes). You mentioned "congested". Might that c...
Which CD's for Imaging/Soundstage?
JS Bach's Musical Offering(on the same cd with Art of the Fugue),Academy of St. Martin in the Fields orchestra. The Musical Offering is contrapuntal and in most parts, you hear three horizontal lines being played at the same times as instruments and...
DYI Speakers. How good can they be?
Let me disclose that I'm one of those Magnepan nuts. That said,I know that Madisound kits are more assembly than do it yourself but the "orignal" odins and the cygnets(sic),the only two pairs of Madisound speakers I've heard, are astonishingly goo...
Jazz Recommendations
A previous poster mentioned Mark C.Gridley's jazz text;it has his top jazz recordings list and is a good overview of the subject. Here are a few to get you started:Early jazz--Louis Armstrong, hot 5/hot 7 recordingsSwing--Ellington,Live at NewportB...
Omegastar dac ...Van Alstine
There is a review at audioasylum.com. No,I have not heard it.
Favourite Guitar CDs
Let me add a classical one. Andres Segovia's recordings of the Bach Lute Suites are outstanding. I've seen guitar players who don't really like classical music sit there with their mouths open listening to Segovia's chops.
I need a live great recording
Let me clean up my own mess. Miles Davis's "Four and More"(and "My Funny Valentine") are recordings of live performances at (then) Philharmonic Hall at Lincoln Center, not Carnegie Hall. Sorry
I need a live great recording
I third the Evans recording and add "Four and More",Miles Davis and others, live at Carnegie Hall.
Front row SPLs; do you listen too loud?
Start with a flute playing as softly as a human can hear it,that's pp. An orchestra with everybody playing as loud as they can play is ff. Starting with pp,each doubling of volume(amplitude) is represented by a dynamic marking.(pp,p,mp,mf,f,ff). p...
