Telarc cd's and Mozart's Requiem
Agree with Kr4 on the Linn for SACD; I was not that impressed with the Channel Classics release with the Netherlands Bach Ensemble on SACD. The best performance in my book and a pretty good recording is the Peter Schreier (can't remember the choru...
What Do You Get When You Spend Megabucks?
Typical good post by Onhwy61. I agree with your main premise, that you can get excellent sound for $7500, and beyond that the law of diminishing returns kicks in. What you get when you spend the extra money is, IMHO, (i) top quality bass reproduct...
Anyone heard Jadis JS 1 tube dac
Very musical. The original version of the DAC is a Jerry Ozment design, if you get an earlier one I would expect it should sound similar to an Audio Logic Model 34, but perhaps a little more on the dark side (Jerry used better quality capacitors i...
Album cd or LP with best bass for new subwoofer
For more organ recordings with REAL deep bass, none of that wimpy 32 hz stuff, check out the thread by Texasdave "Organ CDs with Really Deep Bass". Or for bass drums giving you somewhere only in the 35-40 hz bass but the "instantaneous thrust" Sea...
Properly connecting an isotaion transformer
What I just had done (still not hooked up to the outlets) is to have a separate 100 amp subpanel away from my main panel for the house and run four separate lines from it, 2 20 amp lines for my amps/active speaker crossovers and two separate 20 am...
Has anyone tried upsampling a CD to 96k/24 bit?
I agree with Kal here. You're certainly not going to gain any new information from the upsampling process; at most you're adding noise (mind you, I do like upsampling's effect, but I'm not going to pretend that I'm getting more information from th...
Good Amp/Preamp for "bright " Thiel 3.6 speakers ?
The above advice is excellent. Adding to Tom's post, if you can't afford the Krell FPB series, you could try an older KSA model (either the 150 or 250 would work well) rather than the KAV models, which I agree won't be nearly as good. You have exc...
GE 6550's
I don't know if GE is still making 6550s, but when I got my Jadis amps in 1990 they were and I had their 6550s in my amps. In the Jadis equipment, the GEs could not hold a candle to the Philips 6550s I got to replace them, nor to the Svetlana 6550...
Which Sony: SCD-1, XA777ES or XA9000ES?
The SCD-1. Take a look at Audio Asylum on this, there are a lot of posts on this topic on the Hi-Rez Highway forum. The big difference is the transport, which was a cost-no-object job on the SCD-1 and, according to the posts I recall, a much bette...
Would Audiogoners be interested in this?
This seems like a great idea. I've been following the Hi-Rez section of AA for info on SACD releases, but would welcome a section here as well that would cover all formats.
What are the best speakers for Mahler?
BIG speakers!! :^) Seriously, while any system can play Mahler symphonies and be satisfying in its own way, in my view to get the full emotional impact of Mahler you need full range speakers (nearly flat extension at least into the mid-30s (bass d...
Alnico Tweeter Replacements for Alon Vs
If Alon says that's all you need, that's great--then just be demanding on any supplier to be sure that the drivers you get are the right ones and as closely matched as possible.
Alnico Tweeter Replacements for Alon Vs
Although I'm no technical expert, I'd beware of trying to do this one myself. Does Alon also have to change anything in the crossover for the tweeter (often this is the case, even for a driver with the same nominal specs)? And you may not get twee...
Kharma, Wilson Sophia, JM Labs I'm confussed????
I too think you have a nice system. Given your room size, I'd be careful about going with a large full-range speaker, it could overload the room in the bass and you'd lose the flexiblity you have with the separate sub to control the deep bass leve...
Get rid of the Dunlavys?
Seems to me that you're contemplating more a lateral move than an upgrade. I would normally advise against that path. I am not familiar with the Denon, so take this for what it's worth, but you might want to consider whether it's the electronics i...
