what is a ground lift switch.
Idea is probably to lift the ground and thus counter and hopefully eliminate a ground loop hum, if you have one in the system. I've got them on my Sonogy solid state amps in my system. I found it works to eliminate most if not all of any ground lo...
The old timers give the young'ns tips on the 60s.
I also enthusiastically recommend the Blues Project, thanks to Al for the link to the anthology, as my Projections album is in awful condition. Danny Kalb remains one of my favorite guitarists of all time. Also, any Byrds or Yardbirds (look at the...
How about an accordion thread?
In addition to the ones mentioned above, for something completely different there are Accordiorama and Accordiorama 2, a pair of old Vanguard recordings from the 60s that featured the Hohner Accordion Orchestra playing arrangements of both light c...
My dunlavy scV sound harsh
I agree with the above. The Dunlavys excell with high quality amplification and sources, but will pretty accurately reproduce what they are fed. One other possibility is your room--is it untreated with reflective surfaces at the first reflection p...
back ground noise with my wilson puppy8
I'll ask the obvious, how old are the tubes in the electronics; are you hearing tube rush?
Loudspeakers with a wide sweet spot
The speakers I own (Sforzando JL-1s), and other speakers designed by Fr. Richard Davidson (the old ITC speakers from way back, for example), would meet your requirements. You'd need me to get you in touch with him, though, as these speakers are no...
VPI 16.5 Problem
One other thing, the plastic nut to hold down the record needs to be put on so that the solid (as opposed to the hollow) end is facing up, not down. If you do it wrong, that will also cause the record to stop spinning. Has happened to me on occasion.
ss amp synergy w/wilsons
The Ayres sounded very nice with the WP7s and other Wilsons I used to listen to at my dealer's, as did the Accuphase 50 watt integrated, a surprisingly sweet amplifier. I'd say you wouldn't go wrong with any of the amps you mention as well, just d...
Playing Classic HDAD/DAD from a server?
You need a DVD player that can output a 24/96 signal to effectively use your DAC with a Classic DAD, a CD player won't read the disc. I know because that's why I had to get one (an older Marantz unit). I would therefore think that you need a disc ...
which is your favorite inexpensive stereo system?
For the person you describe I generally recommend a low-powered NAD or Marantz receiver or integrated and CD player and some small bookshelf speakers like the PSB Alphas/Betas or the small Epos speakers. That's the way I started in the electronics...
I could cry
I wouldn't be too harsh on the cat, it was probably just looking for your Cat Stevens albums, or perhaps the single Cat Scratch Fever. And you can't blame it for getting locked in the closet...
BNC to RCA adaptor
My Forsell transport had a BNC output; when the RCA adapter they had furnished wore out (my digital cables were too heavy, and bent the inner pin) I had a coax RCA connection installed, which sounded good but not as good as the BNC. When I had the...
upgrading JADIS JA-200, JPS2 and JPS3
I thought that was what it was. Interesting, you have as many chassis to deal with as I do with my JP200MC! And I don't even use the phono stage in the Jadis, unless my outboard phono stage I have is out for updates.I have gone without mods to my ...
upgrading JADIS JA-200, JPS2 and JPS3
Since the JPS2 is essentially the line stage of the JP80 (not sure how the extra tube for the CD input fits in, though, if you have it in your preamp), Arthur's mods for the JP80 should be applicable for that unit, though I'd want a qualified tech...
upgrading JADIS JA-200, JPS2 and JPS3
Andy's principal changes were in using vintage resistors throughout the units in place of the stock resistors. He did not change any capacitors, except in the amps (where he put in a couple of vintage oil caps), and I'm not sure where they were us...
