Pre-Amp vs. Integrated...why?
Yes, a separate pre/power amp will beat a receiver for SQ! But the sky's the limit for cost! I, however, like and use vintage gear (have a Marantz 2235) - a large collection! Presently using an RGR 4 preamp, GAS Son of Ampzilla and DCM Time Window...

Mein Gotte! Where does it all end! Wires, wires and MORE wires ...

Dr.Watson! Come here quick! What is it Sherlock? More phlogiston in the wires, eh? Sherlock: Yes, and a bed of new roses! Watson: This poor fellow needs some professional counseling before he goes off the deep end! Sherlock: I'm afraid it might be...

You could add a speaker selector box! I have one made by Adcom.
Add speakers lose power ?
Only if the power amp has a switched set of outputs - Speaker A and Speaker B.
Just getting started on a budget and need bookshelf speakers/receiver now
@shaunac: The NAD 3020 V2 is a superb integrated amp! No AM/FM tuner in it. Why would you want to listen to cr*ppy broadcast radio? Internet radio gives you a whole universe of choices!

@schwantner: I have given the OP the BEST possible combination for his budget! Your lengthy post is just plain over-thinking! A common problem with others on this site!

UB-5 + NAD 3020 V2 = $800. Well within your budget! This is what I would buy for myself if I had a limited amount to spend!

Get the Elac UB-5's! Superb 3-way speaker designed by famed Brit Steve Jones (TAD). There is a pair now available on EBay for $408.91 (free shipping) from seller "savarety-official-store". That is about $100 less than the other sellers!
What would be good preamp to run McCormick dna1
Another good budget choice is the PS Audio 4. I have two! Quite affordable!
inherent design flaws with a 3 way, 15" / 8" / horn (large tower) speaker?
A 15 inch woofer can go up to 800hz easily in a two-way system. Altec A7's (VOTT). Same for the Altec 19. Why waste money on car speakers? Vintage Altec 15's can easily be found on EBay and other sites.

Stick to 2-channel (the Polks) or go home theater if you want extra speakers!
Add speakers lose power ?
You are not losing power! But your sound quality will surely suffer from adding extra speakers! Otherwise get a 5-channel HT receiver and do a full home theater setup! And seriously, those Bose cubes are really cr*ppy sounding!
