4 Ohm Load
I used to own a pair of JBL L300s and I'm still kicking myself for selling them. Now that speaker would work fine with your SX-636.
Why aren't new vacuum tubes as good as old ones?
It is my understanding the materials have a lot to do with it, but I believe there is an art to manufacturing tubes and even though the same equipment is used there are different people involved in the manufacturing process.
who wants tone controls on your next preamp?
Tgrisham, "It is a fact that at low volume our ears are less sensitive to low frequencies hence the loudness compensation." Or could it be the system is not in balance with only a fraction of a watt? Theo, Dynaco introduced that circuit in 1966 wi...

Blueacara, I find it hard to believe your Onkyo receive has a high noise floor and sounds brittle. What is your source and cables?
Preamp for Quad 303 with Ls3/5a or Rega Elicit?
Csacred, The answer to your question is no, the Quad 303 is not easy to match with non-Quad preamps. The Quad 33 is the match for your amp, but you might try the Quad 34 preamp or possibly the Quad 66.
directional cables?
Tbromgard, The arrows point in the direction the signal is flowing. In other words, the arrow should point away from the CD player and toward your integrated amp.

Have you tried the Onkyo by itself instead of using it as a preamp? There is always the possibility you have a bad match between the Onkyo and your amp.
4 Ohm Load
You can try it, but don't get your hopes up. Receivers like your Pioneer were designed to work with very efficient 8 ohm speakers and with the right speaker they can sound quite good. I personally have not had good results trying to drive 4 ohm sp...

There is no way 10' is too far apart for Klipshorns. Blueacara, Since your Klipschorns have a built-in toe angle it is important that you are sitting at the proper distance from the speakers. Try adjusting your listening position so the speakers a...
Fuse values
Tvad, It has been so long since I have had to replace a fuse I forgot some of the things you mentioned. Thanks for the refresher course.
Matching preamp to amp
Daveyf, Read your question again then read my response. The CAT has the same output as Audio Research preamps that matches your D-70. Actually the ARC SP-8 is a matching preamp for your D-70 and has a maximum output of 60 volts, but you won't be u...
Matching preamp to amp
You shouldn't have any problems driving the D-70 with the CAT. Maximum output on your CAT is more like 50 volts which is the same as preamps from Audio Research.
what to do............
I agree with Rodman. Give the drivers time to loosen up a little before doing anything. The difference you hear at night could be because it is quieter than during the day, less distractions. Give it some time.
Equipment between speakers...
"Nothing" between the speakers is your best bet. You are already beginning to hear the affects and you will hear more as time goes on. Once you are familiar with the difference of having "nothing" between the speakers you can't go back. You can le...
Conrad Johnson PV-10 vs. PV-11
The PV11 is the better preamp and it cost almost twice as much as a PV10 new. New price for a PV10 was $995. New price for a PV11 was $1895. These preamps are about 20 years old now and may be due for service.
