El34 vs. KT88
"I have only heard the EL34's in action so far.""I know for a fact that there are many good tube amps out there that work great with the 2C's."Oh really?
Active vs. regular speaker cable non active
If your dealer is recommending the Synergistic Galileo Basik Activ SE he should let you try it long enough to make a decission. I think the recommended break-in period would be a reasonable trial period. Possibly 200-500 hours?
Ads with no picture WTF??
If I am comfortable with the seller and I know the product I couldn't care less whether or not there is a picture. Most of the pictures don't reveal the flaws anyway and sellers can con you if that's what they want to do. I received two items in t...
El34 vs. KT88
Robertsong, If you plan on using the older 2Cs stick with ARC. That is all Richard Vandersteen used at the shows back then and Audioquest used Vandersteen speakers to evaluate their cables. You can't go wrong.
One source delivering higher volume.
I just had this conversation with a friend. He claims that many combination players put the focus on DVD with better DACs while the CD portion of the player uses lower grade parts. A difference in volume has to be higher voltage for DVD also.
Def tech supercube reference or REL R-528
First of all, do you have a separate amplifier and preamp? The REL and Vandersteen subs are your best choices, however, they connect to your system very differently. The REL is the most flexible. You connect it to the outputs on your amplifier, in...
El34 vs. KT88
The Audio Research amplifiers that are the same vintage as your 2Cs used 6550 output tubes. If you have a budget of $2,000-$2,500 you can pick up an ARC Classic 60 and SP-14 preamp and you will have a first class system that is a perfect match. Ad...
Replasment for Mullard Long Plates?
If you like the Mullard sound go with CV4004.
El34 vs. KT88
Find yourself a used Audio Research amp and preamp in your price range, 60 watts per channel or more with Audioquest cables. It's the perfect match with your older 2Cs. Forget about 300Bs and any other low powered amps. They will not cut it in the...
What Do You Hear When Your Amp Needs Biasing?
I find it hard to believe you could hear the difference between a setting of 240 and 250. Actually with a slightly lower bias setting the vocals could sound a little smoother unless it was only one tube here and there that was low. In that case yo...
Warm Sounding Speakers
Johnnyb53, Bose 901s are continuously being revised. The most recent revision was in 2010. They use an acoustic matrix enclosure and helically-wound aluminum voice coils. You can run them on 10-450 watts. I would love to try 901s, but they will no...
Fixing Vandersteen 2c's?
Do you want the speakers sound right? You cannot properly repair them yourself. If you send your speakers to Vandersteen they will come back looking and sounding like new speakers.
Warm Sounding Speakers
Tpreaves, Read Jeff Dorgay's review in Tone Audio on the Bose 901. Google Tone Audio to read the entire review. It is interesting.
Warm Sounding Speakers
Bose 901 might work for you. They sound a lot like Maggies and you can dial in the sound with the dedicated EQ.
Noise/distortion coming out of speakers
Nothing wrong with Mofimadness' advice except it's not a cure. The problem will soon return and as it returns the sound is degrading. I tried the rapid rotation method on a preamp and the volume pot eventually froze up and needed to be replaced an...
