Budget/value SS power amp recommendation
Kinergetics Research has a few amps under $500.  They are out of business and a good value sound per dollar. I bought an old Marshall Leach Heathkit amp for $250.  I am rebuilding it now,  but it is surprisingly nice sounding.  Sumo has the Polari...
Harbeth 30.1 or legacy calibre
I see no problem with someone wanting to explore 2 very different speakers. Even though they are very different from each other, they both will provide a FAIRLY neutral presentation, they will both provide a good sound stage and both will image we...
Vandersteen 1 repair.
mixed feelings about this.  I'm in Arkansas and I can certainly measure the current driver if you'd like to send it... Its a tough call. You can't simply replace a 4 ohm or 8 ohm driver with the same and get away with it.  You have to run impedanc...
Tekton DI Monitors
Well if you asked Joe what his D'Appolito design is,  he would tell you that he made the MTM design to reduce lobing and improve midrange output on a standard 2 way.  To do this properly,  the driver spacing & Crossover frequencies are critica...
Best vintage amps (late 70s / early 80s) under $3k?
@pts     Anything on my list that sounds like an M22 without running hot?  No. My old Sumo on that list is so significantly modified.  It is the best Sumo amp that I have heard,  Period.  The M22 won't hold up to this Nine.  Its been soooo long si...
Best vintage amps (late 70s / early 80s) under $3k?
Well of the things that I've heard from that era,  some already mentioned. Ampzilla.... Although the Son and Grandson sound better. Any of these with updated parts are excellent. Heathkit  AA-1600 & AA-1800.  Marshall Leach Amps, same as the o...
Should I recap my speakers? If so who can do it?
I agree with you jeales.  Suggesting new drivers to a guy who wants a recap makes no sense... Also,   these speakers crossovers are more complicated than most already.  To make parts changes is really suggesting a totally new speaker.
Should I recap my speakers? If so who can do it?
@bache     why are you recommending that jamesfokes replace the drivers in his Mirage.  You know that would require an new crossover design.  Or does james have a defective driver and I missed it?
Should I recap my speakers? If so who can do it?
@jamesfokes I am currently advising another Agoner in NC about a complete new build and have another Agoner from Michigan sending me drivers and crossovers.... Grannyring is more than qualified for this.  Please make arrangements for him to do thi...
Do Bigger Speakers Mean a Bigger Window?
"Yet it's hard to recall many small speakers which attained classic legendary status apart from the BBC designed LS3/5A"  Spica,  Rogers BBC, Advent, EPI, ADS...  A little bigger gets you, AR11 or Dynaco A25 or Spendor SP1
Should I recap my speakers? If so who can do it?
I've been kinda arguing with Invictus005 on a couple of threads.  His points are actually correct that a polyprop is better than a mylar and a film & foil is better than a polyprop and a styrene is better than a film & foil and a Teflon is...
Whizzer cone removal
@fourwnds Agree with bache 100%... this should help Program and MicMeasure your speakers after you cut the whizzer off, you’ll get a good look immediately where they roll off. Quite easy then to figure where to cross the tweeter. https://www.roome...
Whizzer cone removal
@fourwnds after reading that you are unaware of what 6db means I would not recommend that you cut off the whizzer on any expensive part..  I don't see anywhere about what driver you are using.  It would take some understanding of frequencies and c...
Mundorf MKP Audiophiler or ClarityCap ESA ?
Ok,  I guess that I'm just wrong about Teflon's leaning cool, so please  set everyone straight and list the 4 caps that we should all use... Everyone will be relieved that we no longer need to shop or go through this extensive testing or read from...
