Swapping the MMF 5 for an SL-1210M5G
tvad, did you need to alter the tonearm height with the benz micro on the technics?Radioheadokplayer (Threads | Answers)I've adjusted the tonearm height many times as I've listened to find the "sweet spot". I can't recall if I adjusted it when I i...

I think he's referring to hearing music come off the needle. Perfectly normal.Sinisterporpoise68 (System | Threads | Answers)Oh. Could be.He wrote noise, so I assumed noise, not un-amplified music. If it's the acoustic sound of the needle playing i...

06-20-08: RadioheadokplayerI am also noticing for very quiet ballads and in between tracks some noise not hum kind of like a muffled sound and on occasion but not often some pops. Is it a fair guess that this means the vinyl needs to be cleaned?Po...
What amp would be good for the Aerial 7b's
I ran them with a Bryston 4B SST, and then a 14B SST. The 4B SST's protection circuitry kept shutting down after playing the system at high volumes for 45 minutes to an hour. That's why I bought the 14B SST, which seemed to work well. The 7B do req...

06-20-08: UndertowTvad,Okay got you, Well I hope its 12 grams without counting the technics extra headshell weight...That's my understanding.I think your cart is 6.5 grams. I use a Benz Micro Ace, which is 8.8 grams, and I don't use the headshell ...
Swapping the MMF 5 for an SL-1210M5G
I do wonder, however, if the DL-103 series should be calculated at the stated compliance of 5 or figured more as 7 or 8. The Catridge Database does mention that Denon cites their compliance at 100 Hz instead of 10KHz (as, presumably, other cartrid...
Swapping the MMF 5 for an SL-1210M5G
06-20-08: Johnnyb53...if you swap out the very light Technics headshell for a 12g Sumiko or LPGear, or a 15g Audio Technica Technihard, you can get the resonant frequency down to the 11's. Add the fluid damper and it flattens the resonance out, wh...
Swapping the MMF 5 for an SL-1210M5G
I'm withdrawing my endorsement of the DL103R with the Technics SL12xx, because according to the resonance calculator on cartridgedb.com, the Denon 103R is not a good match for the 12 gram Technics tonearm. It's well out of the green zone for accep...
what concerts do you wish you attended?
06-19-08: Dreadheadthe concert for Bangla DashMe too. It was over way too quickly.Do you mean the Concert for Bangladesh?Sorry...couldn't resist.:)
H20 Revisited
06-19-08: SuttsBeware the Ref 1000's on higher efficiency speakers- the flaws were easily revealed (lack of body; slightly grainy highs)Ditto that. My speakers are 92dB...not that high relative to many others.
what concerts do you wish you attended?
Any Zeppelin show from the Physical Graffiti era.Any Pink Floyd show in the late 70s.Any Genesis show prior to Peter Gabriel's exit from the band.
my sl 1210 is louder on the right channel
Undertow makes a good point. Once you've done the interconnect switching method to track down the offending component, then you can start tube swapping.Of course, you could start tube swapping from the beginning, and you might get lucky.
I Feel Overwhelmed....Please Help
Good advice above.Buy used, or buy what you can hear first in your system for a month. Also, buy stuff that has a decent following so the pool of buyers is large.
Speaker wire upgrade??
Straley does bi-wire. In fact, he'll do a version where the amp end has two leads and the speaker end has four leads, or he'll do four separate runs for each channel. I can never remember which is considered shotgun and which is considered true bi...
my sl 1210 is louder on the right channel
Try switching the cartridge leads left to right where they connect to the cartridge. If the channel imbalance switches channels, then you have a faulty cartridge (or something off in the cartridge set-up...perhaps azimuth). If the channel imbalance...
