PASS LABS XA-30.5 vs XA-60.5
08-22-10: RoorAny recommendations on speakers in the $5500-$7000 (used a'gon prices) if I upgrade my totem hawk speakers??Not specifically, but I suggest you look at something with a high sensitivity rating (mid 90s+ dB).
KCI Silkworm+ VS Gabriel Gold interconnects
Regarding vocals, which one do you prefer? I like sweet, rich and lush vocals. Each are faithful to the recording. Neither creates rich or lush vocals if those characteristics are not already in the recording.Any dynamic difference? Such as one is ...
Trade- off, power SS vs tube magic.
I don't think I have ever heard someone say this tube amplifier is the most solid state sounding yet.Rrog (Answers | This Thread)I have heard comments, and I believe read comments in which people characterized a particular tube component (amp, pre...
Where do you have your rack?
My equipment is on a side wall. My interconnects are low capacitance, 30 footers, but I run balanced from the preamp, so interconnect length is not an issue.I would say running long interconnects in a single ended system is not an ideal scenario. ...
Still point risers or Racing cones?
DId you get to demo the MiG footers?Glory (System | Threads | Answers | This Thread)Yes. I bought them and demo'd them and kept them. I think they're effective. They remind me of something one might find at Pier One Imports or Cost Plus that was ma...
Merlin TSM comparisons
06-26-10: RebbiHooray,Finally got my TSM-mmi's from Merlin on Monday of this week. It's been over two months without any comment about the TSM-MMi speakers...what's the scoop?
Current production "budget" warm/dark SS amp?
All of the amps I mentioned have an input impedance of 100k Ohms, and will match well with the Calypso preamp's 1k Ohm output impedance. They will all drive your Sehring 703s speakers without any problem. The Belles 150A Reference is current. The 3...
Current production "budget" warm/dark SS amp?
You don't mention what speakers or preamp you'll be using, or how much power you require, so only a general recommendation can be made.First, is the Belles 350A Reference (or 150A Reference). While I don't consider it "dark", I do consider it to b...
PASS LABS XA-30.5 vs XA-60.5
From the Pass Labs XA-60.5 manual:The question comes up all the time – are balanced inputs (XLR) better than single-ended (RCA)? The answer is that balanced lines generally give lower noise and slightly less distortion. They are recommended unless...
PASS LABS XA-30.5 vs XA-60.5
08-18-10: Charles1dadUnless your cable run is long there`s no inherent superiority of balanced ICs.Ground loop noise is another reason that balanced may be superior to single ended in some systems.Balanced operation can eliminate the common-ground...
Trade- off, power SS vs tube magic.
Others seem to know the question I am asking. Why don't you?Orpheus10 (Threads | Answers | This Thread)OK. I'll directly answer the question, "Can a higher power SS substitute for this "subjective" magic?" There is no definitive answer. It depend...
Trade- off, power SS vs tube magic.
What do you say? Let's try to keep the speaker variable out of this.Orpheus10 (Threads | Answers | This Thread)I say you can't keep the speaker variable out of a discussion of tube versus solid state amplifiers because the speaker is the primary d...

PASS LABS XA-30.5 vs XA-60.5
This whole balanced issue often gets over analyzed, IMO. Unless one has obvious noise issues running with single ended equipment, or one has very long interconnects, then there should be no problem running single ended with Pass Labs amps provided...
PASS LABS XA-30.5 vs XA-60.5
I have been told the 60.5’s give you much better smoothness and cohesiveness, better imaging, better bass control, greater ease and greater resolution.Roor (Threads | Answers | This Thread)In my system, on Silverline Audio Sonata III loudspeakers ...
