01-27-06: Rudgetvad, where did you get the sylvanias? I have been unable to find a dealer who has them available. thanksrudgeWish I could tell you. I have not found a source, either. Mine were on loan from a friend. That's the sound of the other sh...
VAC Ren II, VAC Phi, or ARC Ref 3?
Keithr, I'm going to jump in with a comment about my burn-in experience as it relates to a Modwright SWL9.0SE with Blackate cap upgrade. I know the Modwright is not in the rarified air of the preamps being discussed here, but my burn-in observatio...
Modwright SWL9.0 SE Tube Rolling
I thought the JAN GE 7044 were basically the same as the TungSol 5687. My SWL9.0SE still had hardness and glare in the upper mids with the JAN GE 7044. Others believe the JAN GE 7044 are better than the TungSol. Associated gear probably plays a role.
DK Design VS- Reference vs Signature
Tube dealers sell on E-Bay just like they do on Audiogon or their own websites or over the telephone. E-Bay, Audiogon and personal websites are simply marketing opportunities...virtual storefronts. One should not make the mistake of assuming legit...
Modwright SWL9.0 SE Tube Rolling
Having just listened to the SWL9.0SE with Sylvania GB-5687 and JAN GE 7044 tubes, I can say the Sylvania's have a profoundly positive affect on the musicality of the Modwright preamp in my system. No glare or hardness like I was experiencing with ...
DK Design VS- Reference vs Signature
NOS means exactly that...New, Old Stock. These are unused vintage tubes. Used tubes cannot be called NOS, but NOS is a term commonly misused by tube sellers to describe any vintage tube. That's why a buyer of NOS tubes should always ask the seller...
Which Shunyata Hydra is best sounding?
They all sound alike, they have the same parts, just more of them in the 4,6.8My listening experience, and the listening experience of a friend is otherwise. We both thought the Hydra 2 and Hydra 4 sounded a little different. Also, the author of th...
Z squared AUAU gold alloy ICs, no image at all
I have tried them, and I thought the sound was terrific...in fact I sold some Nirvana SL interconnects and kept the Z Squared.
Best tube preamp, cost not object ?
I was sort of entertaining the First Sound products after reading about them on this thread, but I was unimpressed by the SWL9.0SE. For the money, it's pretty good. I was just under the impression that the First Sound stuff was beyond it.The defi...
Z squared AUAU gold alloy ICs, no image at all
For some reason my post didn't all come through. You could cross them and see if the image shifts from left to right. My original thought was to swap the left and right ICs, but not cross them. See if the image shifts. Also, be sure the directional ...

UcD vs TriPath Digital amps.
Eldartford, I'm thinking in particular of the synergistic mating between the Modwright SWL9.0SE and the D200 monos that has been reported in several user reports and reviews. IMO, the Modwright is very linear and accurate, and benefits (or could b...
Cable Break-in....again?
I can't help but wonder how much of the so called break in is just getting used to the revised sound of the system with the new gear? in other words you are the one breaking in not the gear.I tend to think this effect plays a major part in the cab...
What song best sums up the previous year?
Hang in there, Satch.
UcD vs TriPath Digital amps.
Eldartford, your description of the D200 is similar to my impression of the D100 when I tried them. I imagine they are a great match with sources and preamps that favor accuracy and extension, and perhaps not so ideal with warmer gear. What do you ...
