Where do you draw the line???
Nate, now let's not jump to any conclusions about me probably not liking your system. Just because I am very opinionated about what I want in my system, doesn't mean that I can't enjoy what others have put together. Our electronics and speaker sys...
Where do you draw the line???
Ok, I'll throw something into the mix here. I think that system complexity has alot to do with the performance/cost equation. A very complex system, with a lot of power, and will typically cost more. I know this is not ALWAYS the case, but typical...
Rega 25 or VPI Scout
How about also taking a look at the Nottingham Horizon or the Origin Live Aurora? Those are 2 other nice tables in your price range.
Cart sensitivity Vs step-up before phono stage
Mmcoy, no linestage has 84db gain. You can't use the above formula for an integrated amp, unless the specs show a separate figure for the linestage section. Most linestages have between 12db and 20db gain. There are some a little higher and some a...
Preamp Deal of the Century
I hope that nobody here thinks that I would miss a fine wine discussion on the same thread with a fine preamp!I have enjoyed the Penfold's and I have also found that there are several nice Shiraz made by Grant Burge in the Barossa Valley region of...
Nottingham Audio Space Deck Review
Hi Jojo.I'm really glad you are enjoying your table and your system. That is what it is all about. I'm also glad you liked my tonearm mod. Have fun!
Cart sensitivity Vs step-up before phono stage
I would say that if your preamp linestage has about 20db or more gain, in addition to the 60db in your phonostage(for a total of 80db), you should be in the ballpark for a 0.21mv cartridge. If you have a low gain preamp, then you might need a step...
What do You listen to?
Must be an age difference thing.Quite frankly, I can't find any interest in any of the bands you listed, until you got to the Blues category. As far a classical music being formless and impromptu, it is the most mathematically structured music ever...
ZYX Fuji vs. Lyra Helicon
Gmorris, I agree that proper loading will make a world of difference in the sound. I feel that just leaving the loading at 47k really does interfere with the proper function and sound of a good cartridge that is not designed to be loaded at 47k. I...
ZYX Fuji vs. Lyra Helicon
Cmo, this "lean" thing is pretty subjective. I don't really know if you will consider it lean in your system or not. I do know that the Lyra Helikon is a very highly regarded cartridge, and I think it would not have that reputation if it had any r...
Unwanted radio signal from turntable
It is also possible that it is coming from the internal tonearm wiring. These wires are normally unshielded and can pick up radio stations. Sometimes grounding the tonearm tube can help this, but you have to be very careful not to interfere with t...
Japanese Pressing Vinyl question
The Japanese pressings do use virgin vinyl and it may well be the same as the Audiophile pressings, although I can't swear to it. The MOFI use JVC Super-Vinyl. In any case the sound is very quiet on japanese pressings, and will rival any audiophil...
ZYX Fuji vs. Lyra Helicon
From the info listed on the ARC website, the Ref phono stage has 69db gain, so as long as you have about 15-20db gain in your preamp linestage, you should be just fine with either of those cartridges as far as gain is concerned. You should be aware...
Analog Guys: Why Kimber?
I never really noticed that. I use Sonoran cables. Perhaps it is just that Kimber is a very popular brand with a long history and alot of different models at different prices. It would stand to reason that the more common cables would be used by m...
Bettering DL 103 ? suggestions ?
While those are all nice cartridges, I think you are going to have a tough time beating a good low output DL103 with a mid-priced high-output MC.I'd stay with the low output cartridge, and get a step up device to provide the needed gain. IMHO.YMMV.
