Ear Candy: Most startling recordings.
John Zorn: Naked City with Bill Frizell on guitar. It never fails to startle and assault simultaneously.
Tuner Recommendation for New York City
Why not a tuner from New York City. Try the Fisher FM-1000 broadcast monitor. Designed originally as an industrial piece to use in radio stations to monitor broadcast quality. Unreal sensitivity and selectivity with a monster capture ratio to boot...
analog newbie
Fujindemon, actually the best thing that you can do to assure the life of your precious vinyl, and for that matter, your cartridge, is to properly set up your turntable and align your cartridge accurately. Make sure that your table is level by usi...
Cartridge Longevity?
My experience with the Blue Point is that, once broken in, it is a rather mellow sounding cartridge. That you prefer the brighter, unbroken in, sound probably indicates that you should purchase a brighter, livlier cartridge. My experience with Mr....
Mo Fi box sets
Nothing is reasonable for any MoFi after the original Doug Sax mastered issues. Gary Georgi had failing high frequency hearing which resulted in the MoFo reissues having horribly boosted highs so that the records would sound good to him. Most are ...
NOS, single ended, push-pull???
Some give the definition as "new original stock", this description being somewhat more accurate than the more common "new old stock".
Great Percussion Recordings
All of the LPs by Brazilian percussion genius Airto on Arista are just great but "Promises of the Sun" has incredible bass impact and ambience. Highly recommended.
Nominal Impedence and Amp Taps
No! Several factors come into play. Damping factor increases as the impedance of the tap decreases. Many are willing to run 8 ohm speakers from a 4 ohm or lower tap to reap the rewards of the increased damping factor at the expense of ultimate pow...
Headphone Amp for Portable CDP
I enjoy my original version of the X-Cans with my 580s but the Audio Alchemy HPA-1 that I have is even better. It contains the Headroom circuit. The thing is class A and runs hot enough to grill toast on but the sound is quite liquid and defined. ...
Can a ic be sent back to...
Please note that if you wish to do it yourself some cables use a laquer on the conductors themselves that must be burnt off before the conductor can be tinned. Many conventional irons just don't get hot enough. Contact the manufacturer before proc...
Not happy yet
Ehart, the frequency balance of your speakers, which I have spent some time with along with owning the SL6Si from which they are derived are very laid back in the mids and even into the highs. This lack of energy in the mid band tends to draw the ...
Can a ic be sent back to...
Bradz, if they are twice as long have both pieces terminated and sell the extra to recoup your costs. Just a thought.
Distortion in amps;most/least annoying?
To broaden the response a bit, I find the distortions in electronics much more irritating than the distortions in transducers, i.e. speakers and phono cartridges. It seems that the distortions in electronics are less consonant with the struture of...
Tubes are not so unreliable
That's why the Russians use them in the guidance systems of the MIG fighters.
Did my CJ Blow a Fuse?
Fuses are not always either blown or good, they frequently enter the nether world of weakened but still working. In this state they can be intermittent, blow too soon or even rectify the signal. Try replacing the fuse. Good luck.
