Cartridge or cable upgrade
Respectfully disagree. I don't think that, given the architecture of the existing system, a Dynavector 10X5, or even a 20XL, will be a subjectively large improvment. The turntable is the limiting factor here and is sonically unbalanced with the re...
Retipping Miyajima mono cartridge
Bob, thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated.Dnath, Art Dudley, in Stereophile did a photographic comparison of the EMT and Ortofon conicals in concert with a column on the two cartridges. I don't think that you seemed inflammatory at all. ...
Retipping Miyajima mono cartridge
Yet a respected cartridge maker who presumably wants to make mono cartridges that sound as good possible and who chooses the mono stylus shape based on extensive listening comparisons is hardly someone to be summarily dismissed as a factor for con...
Retipping Miyajima mono cartridge
All Lyra cartridges have always used line contact stylii and I have no doubt that they are superior, and certainly have a larger groove contact area. But a manufacturer is hardly an unbiased person to quote on such matters. The dissing of conical s...
Retipping Miyajima mono cartridge
You are aware, of course, that an elliptical stylus makes less groove contact than a standard conical and will, broadly speaking, have greater groove wear, all other factors being the same.
Cartridge or cable upgrade
Source first, I find the table unbalanced to the rest of the system. IMHO, sell the turntable, keep the BP and put that money that is burning a hole in your pocket towards a better turntable. I really don't see how upgrading the cartridge right no...
Help with pricing?
Maybe $2200-2400 for the MAs, but you can always start high as some buyers like to haggle. You are right on for the projector and screen but again you may have to wait for that special buyer. It is an imprecise science, after all.Best of luck with...
Tannoy/Micro TM55DD turntable
Yes, it was made by Micro Seiki and that is a great suggestion. There is also a Micro Seiki user's group on Yahoo that is very knowledgable and you might consider joining and posing your query there.
Hifi V.s. The music makers
Because most of their work sucks. There are plenty of mediocre, or worse, artists, deaf engineers and arrogant producers in this world. If I don't correct their errors, who will?

Here is a link to an interesting post by Peter Lederman of Soundsmith on the subject of anti skate:http://db.audioasylum.com/mhtml/m.html?forum=vinyl&n=1080189&highlight=stylus+retipper&r=&search_url=%2Fcgi%2Fsearch.mpl%3Fforum%3Dv...

Very interesting! The stylus on your cartridge has a complex cut. Can you clearly see the larger cuts in the end that meets the groove? I am not doubting, just looking for a bit of education.I have seen any number of skewed cantilevers that I beli...
Rectifier Tubes 5AR4 : New production vs NOS
Joe, interesting that you brought up the JJ, as I really like it as well. I think that we share the minority opinion. Their E34ls are a great tube also and I have not had the issues of reliability reported elsewhere.
Help with pricing?
Too low on #2, too high on #3. #1 and #4 seem fair, but you may wait for the right buyer for #4. #5 a little high, #6 perhaps a bit high, but you may have better luck with #6 on craigslist, IMHO subs are expensive to ship and unless they are speci...
Help me not let this happen again
Who are these unnamed "others" that told you that incorrect anti-skate cannot skew a cantilever? This is not my experience at all. However, as Peter said, 2000 hours is really pushing it as far as stylus life is concerned, though that is another i...
Can a phono stage really do this?
Well the arm/cartridge interface may be responsible for minimizing tics and pops but the phono stage and the rest of the system can be responsible for emphasizing them. To explain a bit further, tics have a rise time that is much greater than reco...
