The right footing for a turntable
Run a pillar of granite up from your home foundation through a hole in your floor to place the turntable on, and make sure the table is located in another room away from any sound source or people (don't want people breathing on the table). Place ...
Tube Amp vs Solid State Amp HELP
Oh, so now we're talking about the "sound" of things? Tube amps make reproduced music sound more accurate in my experience, possibly due to the linearity and even order harmonic content inherint in tube performance, or the ability of tubes to burn...
The right footing for a turntable
My table per the Linn manual (he also wrote "Hamilton") sits on a stable, light, lowish table, and sounds tremendous. Maple schmaple...
Is it safe to A/B 2 different speakers using my int. amp's balance so I can compare?
Read my post and do what I said…ignore the other posts (although they're all BRILLIANT). I'll wait here.  OK then…or…put on one speaker in mono and sit in front of it for HOURS…take a break, and then listen to the other speaker for hours then do t...
Is it safe to A/B 2 different speakers using my int. amp's balance so I can compare?
Listen to one pair for a while (hours, over a few days, which ever you can get away with), and then do the same with the other pair…this is basically what pro reviewers do. If need be, take notes…one pair will likely make you feel better than the ...
Tube Amp vs Solid State Amp HELP
Also, as I've said before, tube amps make you "seem" more interesting, which is almost as valuable as actually being more interesting. Since you have gone for a SS amp, you can still cut holes in the top and stick tubes in it an light them up with...
Conrad Johnson Repair Issues
I shipped a guitar amp to the manufacturer for an update and it was dropped on its corner by UPS…bent the metal frame corner. It was sent back to me by UPS in the same packaging (!) and I unbent it and it works fine. UPS was an insane pain in the ...
Speaker grills on or off?
I like designers who make speakers that look good with grills off (covers over the driver screws maybe, hidden grill holding magnets, etc.), and I particularly like tweeters designed to have little mesh screens on them to ward off poking, accident...
Question for sub woofer users
One sub can be fine and you should simply move it around until you like the sound (generalizing, but my original REL worked great alone). I did get another REL last year and I like having two just to calm the corner standing waves. The "leave it a...
Amps which are Great, but either Unknown or Underpriced
After reading yet another article about Primaluna amps in a major audio mag, I remain surprised that Jolida rarely gets reviewed (the FX 10 made it in someplace in recent years…but not much else) in audio mags. I assume it's due to a lack of adver...
speakers for listener with Tinnitus
As as a pro musician for almost 5 decades my ears often ring so loud that sometimes other people can hear them! I still get paid to mix (mostly Jazz these days) live shows so the ringing in my head must not be leaking into the mix…lucky...
Test CD for positioning speakers and subwoofer
I use test CDs to see where speakers roll off mostly for amusement purposes only, as my ears still work as the only truly valuable speaker positioning aids.
Help me decide: Grado Gold or AT440ML
I had an AT440 that was simply too bright, and replaced it with a Sumiko Pearl. I still like that damn Pearl…even replaced the stylus recently.
Can pro amps possibly sound good? Crown, QSC, etc
QSC amps and other pro power amps can sound great, although I only use 'em for pro audio gigs (don't like amp fans running in quiet listening or recording rooms). Certainly "bang for the buck" applies with this stuff (I use a "little" QSC amp here...
Creek 5350SE v Evolution 5350
Jafant is the resident Chinaphobe, and it's getting pretty tedious.
