Why do the new 2009 Beatles CDs sound so good?
I just bought, on a lark, the Beatles "Rubber Soul" newly remastered CD... what was surprising to me, was the liner note stating this remastering was based on digital transfers made back in 1987 by George Martin (I think). Well to me, this disc so...
Thiel CS 2 2 vs Snell C IV
Well I'm a fan of the sound of the Snell so I'd go for those.. Snell's not super refined but easy to drive, easy to listen to, do very little wrong just not super high end. I've heard the C's, the D's, and own a pair of E IV's. I've heard the Thie...
Great Music/Bad Vinyl - 2010 Edition

down firing or front firing sub?
I tried my Rega Vulcan downward, frontward, backward, sideways, ... found it worked best for me in my room firing backward with the cone alligned somewhat with the plane the rear port of my mini monitors are in... I would say play around and see w...
Japanese Vinyl Pressing
Japanese Vinyl: mixed bag... sometimes better in some ways, sometimes not... mastered a little 'dry' and sometimes lacks inner detail and spacial information found on other pressings. Vinyl itself is better quality though. Some Jap. pressings have...

Great Music/Bad Vinyl - 2010 Edition
LOTS of pop albums fit the bill:just thinking how BAD the sound is on YES "Yessongs" live 1973 tour.. NO BASS... man I coulda done better with a stereo walkman.how about the HORRIBLE sound of Chicago's IV "Live at Carnegie Hall" 4 record set? in s...

What are the alternatives for Kimber and Cardas?
Just my 2 cents, as I have used both Cardas Golden Cross and Cardas Golden Reference, I'd have to say the Golden Cross work better for me. The Reference is a bit stale and very neutral, where the Golden Cross has more dimentional and fuller richer...
Interesting priorities

Best Late Night Low Volume Speaker
I always liked my Spica TC-50's with my Music Fidelity A-1 (the original) playing the classical radio station out of NYC on low volume, used to just leave it on all night..
How to make record albums
Astralography: very well said. thank you.
Cannonball Adderley's "Somethin Else"... Mono?
I think "Somethin Else" is right up there with "Kind of Blue".I think personally for me, although I own an 'audiophile' reprint 180 g pressing in Stereo, I wish I had bought the mono now instead.. stereo in those days sometimes was a gimmicky one ...
Record Club vs. Store purchased records
Good info, Elizabeth.. I can remember playing some record club pop/rock pressings way back when I had crappy gear and could tell the pressings were lower grade then! I would say, trash all the columbia club pressings of pop/rock and try to find us...
