Is Direct Current An Option?

What!?!?!? We use AC because of Westinghouse. We don't have a power plant every 10 blocks because of Westinghouse. Edison was the guy paying people to publicly electrocute animals with AC to show how dangerous it is. 
I'm not sure why anybody would want a house wired in DC. So many things use AC motors, like HVAC, ventilation fans in your bathroom, your refrigerator, common box fans, computer power supplies, microwaves...  Windmills don't actually produce DC. They make AC using gigantic alternators just like in your car. And yes, your car's alternator is an AC device. 
The renewable energy biz is giving the audio hobby a favor: big, fat power JFETs! They like to use them in DC to AC inverters because they're more efficient and they just happen to sound excellent in an amplifier!

Thanks kosst, my error. I should have said that Tesla won the current war rather than Edison. Anyhow, my impression is that consumers can order current directly from an energy source but that this source of energy is not shared with anyone else. However of course, I could be wrong about this also.

Your are already listening to DC. All devices use DC powered circuits. AC is a great way to transmit electricity and transformers allow voltage conversion and capacities allow us to convert to DC. DC is impractical for transmission but necessary to power all circuits.

DC at the wall outlets would make audio equipment with a transformer stop working.

Per this article DC service is available in some areas of San Francisco.  It's a specialty use.
