Is it so bad that it is good??

I really do not listen to rock/alternate radio stations.
However recently for some quirky reason I was listening to
99.1 out of Baltimore/Washington. I went bananas over
one song. It took about a week at the local music stores, but finally I found out the group:Godsmack. I bought it. It is the first rock CD I have purchased since Nirvana's Nevermind CD of 1991(?). The first three songs are the most awesome metal angst I have heard. Are they even considered a metal band or what. By my moniker, I am not a terribly "up" on rock these days. But by metal standards are they terrible, average or even good. Who else even sounds like them, particularly that machine gun bass?? Thanks to any who comment.

David, I did tonight. Overall you are absolutely correct!!
However, I am just entranced with the first three songs on the second CD. It is that killer machine gun bass that gets me going!! The rest of the CD is just filler, actually pretty mundane. Hey the albums of most rock groups have
a couple of "hits" and the rest is filler including the best of the best rock groups. I do not have to tell you how many albums that I have purchased over the last 40 years that are one hit wonders.

Shubertmaniac-pick up the first Godsmack.IMO it blows away the second release!
Thanks everyone for their suggestions. Yes, I have turned
on the radio again, but the songs that get heavy rotation
are Creed,POD, Nickleback,Adema(?), Puddle of Mud, and Razz(?). None sound anything like Godsmack(I only have their second CD, Awake, not their first). As far as this CD on
my rig sounds(Acoustat 2+2s, Spectral DMC-10&DMA-200),the DMA-200 will shut down on the bass drum/ bass guitar middle section of the third song "Greed". I have brought down ,out of the attic, my Bose 901(Series One,1971) speakers, HK Citation 11, and Phase Linear 700. With that system I can really rock it (tone controls and all)without too much trouble. Does Tool have that machine gun bass line like Godsmack? Or that gruffy voice of their lead singer??
Thanks again.
Aren't you answering your own question in the same way we all recommend answer the good/bad/average question with regards to audio components - you loved the song, therefore it's good. Keep listening to that radio station or to some of the suggestions you've gotten in this thread and you'll find other "good" music. I'm not familiar with the Godsmack album you describe (tho I probably will be soon based on the positive response!), but there are quite a few bands that get me going along the same lines. -Kirk
Did any of you guys see Spheeris' latest Decline of Western Civilization? She documented OzzFest which featured Godsmack, System of a Down and the rest of the flock of like sound rock. A fun film. I think y'all would enjoy it. Personally I find this latest wave of rock to be the second generation of a musical style whose orginators were more talented. I hate to post this without an album recommendation, so Nine Inch Nails' 'Broken'. Good to see a Shubert maniac rockin' out.
Ditto for the Godsmack's debut and Tool's latest. Now, if you get the System of a Downs' "Toxicity" , you will be a couple of notches up than the Godsmack. Really I think, they are the replacement ( a compliment) for the old good metallica. But you get tired after a while.... Try what I and others suggested above. Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory is also exceptionally good.
The self titled, 1st release "Godsmack" is awesome! I dont think they 'try' to sound like anyone else.Their sound is unique to my ears.Check out Linkin Park "Hybrid Theory" Great CD!! Creed "My own Prison" I agree Metallica is #1 (all on vinyl) Alice In Chains is way cool too! Check out their self titled LP (yes,on vinyl) it has a one legged dog on the cover."Jar of flies" is very good too.Avaliable on vinyl also.White Zombie is awesome!Their Astro-Creep:2000 is spine tingling!yep, vinyl too!
I bgeleive you might find sepultura to your likings both chaos AD & arise are great cds.
You might try some "Tool" as well. The recording quality is quite good for rock/metal and will push the limits of your hi-fi in dynamics, speed and imaging.
To me, they sound like they can't decide if they want to be Metallica (machine gun bass) or Alice in Chains, which is not a bad thing. If you like Godsmack, check out "Master of Puppets", "Justice for All" or "Metallica" by Metallica and "Sap", "Dirt", or "Jar of Flies" by Alice in Chains. These bands are genuine rock/metal innovators not to be overlooked.
