VPI Prime noise issue solved (wasn't the Prime's fault:)

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions as I wrestled with my VPI Prime hum issues.  Turned out it had nothing to do with the table.  The one part of my system I forgot to mention was the Eagle PSU speed control.   Apparently the unit causes all of the hum.  I bought it at the same time as the Prime, so I just hooked it all up together.  Tonight I plugged the VPI straight into the wall - almost dead silence.

Too bad that the speed control causes so much noise (I tried different PCs, outlets, positioning, etc.).

Thanks for all the help!

You owe VPI an apology. You really made them look bad to many future purchasers of turntables!
"You owe VPI an apology."

Scott bought a demo from an authorized dealer. So his dealer owes him, and maybe VPI, an apology for not helping him diagnose the problem. If his dealer was doing his job this would never have been posted on a board.
Call Goodyear while you're at it and apologize to them as well. It was the nails fault the tire went flat. And remember, it was only flat on the bottom. Any other tire would have went completely flat.
He should have mentioned that he had an after market speed control on the VPI. That’s a lot different than a nail !
All that really matters is that Scott resolved the problem and his system is working correctly.
So Eagle PSU works similar to prescription: while curing one problem the other problem(s) may reveal + side effects.
As your dealer if Eagle PSU is good for you!
Yes, you are right that I owe VPI an apology - obviously their product was well designed and wasn't causing the problem.  I just overlooked the outboard PSU as a possible source of hum since the VPI motor is not connected to the plinth and the hum was present whether the motor was on or off.  In any event - I didn't mean to cast dispersions on any manufacturer or dealer.  Was just trying to solve a problem.  Phoenix Engineering responded immediately to my email last night, and I'm going to try some solutions they suggested to ground the power supply of the speed controller.

Thanks, Scott
@smrex13 no worries, things happen.  Overall just glad you got everything resolved and can enjoy the Prime the way you're supposed to.  Good example of our concerns of third party products.  Lots of great third party products but we can never truly vouch for what it may or may not do.

@czarivey  love that post!  To be PC I want comment on that further :)

Happy listening!
These things happen, I have been diagnosing crazy problems for almost 40 years and you would not believe what can cause noise in a system.  I remember one guy who had a hum and no matter what we did it would not go away, he moved his table 15" and it was gone.  Apparently there was a power cable in the wall right behind his interconnects and they picked up the radiation!!!  When you amplify things almost 1000 times you never know where the noise will come from.

I'm glad everything worked out for you.

Why you chose to start a new thread is of concern.

See my response on your original thread.

I'm still waiting (two weeks) for just a response through my dealer for my problem.

Frankly, if (this) is the kind of customer service I'll receive going forward...I'll be glad to have VPI buy back my tt for the original price.
To VPI:

I will not start a new thread if you'll buy back my turntable. I will then promise to never have any dealings with your company again.

I will thank you for this as the tt is just sitting around taking up valuable space.

Just for the record.... this issue is just one.. Last Feburary, I sent a question about the tonearm operation to my dealer. (I've saved the email).

I've NEVER received any response. This was just a question about the tonearm's operation folks!!!

Now I have an actual problem. Still, I cannot receive any response through my dealer.

Yet, the OP gets the two main guys responding... how be it still on another thread from the OP's initial issue.

and the beat goes on.......
How about a 40 year old company ...owning up to what at one time was a simple issue, by their non-response, being blown up to a major issue?

donvito101,

I do not think if this was happening to you, you would have posted your response, which, quite frankly, I don't understand.

donvito101,

Your obvious fancy of Abbott & Costello is duly noted.

The question for you is... Why have you felt the need to interject a by-gone-era video for your attempt at making a positive difference? You are trying to make a positive difference, aren't you? If not, why are you posting?

donvito101,

I'd love a video of a person paying 5k for a turntable, only to have some questions about it's operation go unanswered...and then have vibration issues to go unanswered and when those issues were never answered, and then, those issues posted... to have someone like yourself, make light of it....  well.......____________ fill in the blanks!

You,  hopefully, aren't the best of Audiogon!
This was prompted by you posting on two different threads . Why not start your own thread next time?
You failed to read correctly.

The OP's original thread, which I responded to, was eventually subverted to this thread in an attempt to cast doubt on the original thread.

Why am I even responding to you?!!!!  You obviously have no clue!

I wish you well.

I only wish VPI wished me well?
With all of the words expressed here, still no "turntablemat" or  "hwsworkshop".

The question is why?

I can only assume VPI doesn't respond to their customer (me) who have issues and/or question their lack of customer service.

I have the Prime (amazing table btw) and the Eagle.  No hum at all.  My power supply is 3 ft at least from the TT.  Where is your PSU located? By the way the Eagle PSU and Tach work flawlessly and made the TT an even better product.
I have tried every location I can think of.  It's on the floor now, three feet below the table, but the hum is still there.  Using a grounding wire from the Eagle PSU to the phono amp quiets it down, but it's still audible and interferes with low level details.  Right now I'm just plugging the Prime into the wall and not using the Eagle.  I posted on the VPI website, and apparently the hum from the Eagle is a common issue that is often resolved by a ground wire.  I will have to experiment some more, but right now I'm enjoying the Prime as is.
Sorry to hear you can't rid yourself of the hum. I hate hum; you spend all this money on hi quality products and the hum gremlin pokes it head out and puts a damper on everything!

dont give up on eradicating the devil hum, the Eagle is a worthy piece to leverage the most from the table!
smrex13, I sincerely, apologize for overtaking your thread.

donvito101, I apologize for making my issues personal, please forgive me.

I started a new thread.

Happy listening!
Just a heads-up to Falcon users if anyone is having issues...Phoenix Engr is closing their doors Dec. 31 so be sure and contact them directly for any ongoing issues you are having with their products.
