I owned the Denon 1500 MkII, which I believe came out before your 1520. I would consider adding an outboard DAC and see how things sound before spending alot of $ on a new player. CAL made a tube DAC which would certainly warm things up! (Great for Jazz/classical) Currently listening to an older NEC Mid/80's CDP which is 2X oversampling/16bit which sounds great! Just because there are more bits doesn't necessary equate to better sound. Also, system/personal dependent as well.
1. the main role here play CDs themselves despite any kind of DAC resolution. buy some well-engineered CDs and quit comparing CDs to matching records since at that time they were all poorly engineered. replace them for new remasters(if possible) or japanese versions and than try to compare.

2. resolution plays a-little role compared to the output after-DAC analogue proccessing and filters so to upgrade CD-player you should look on these parameters with little-to-no attention.
