Audiogon "RECORDINGS TO DIE FOR" list
I've got almost 1200 CDs, and it's really hard to just narrow down to five top picks. Let me mention some that haven't been listed previously:Joe Jackson "Blaze of Glory" Excellent and ultra-clean recording; very good for evaluating systems.Tony L...
Blind Listening Tests?
Thanks for the laugh, Steve. Good one!
Power Cord For Audio Research gear
No_money, you're missing the point. The important thing is not "don't listen," but "know how to listen." Understand what makes a difference in sound and what doesn't. Make direct listening comparisons, preferably properly set-up double-blind or AB...

Speaker wire is it science or psychology
Steve, Tom Nousaine published a very interesting article in Sound & Vision detailing the results of blind tests of speaker cables. He had audiophile listeners compare 16 AWG zip cord to their own chosen brand/model of speaker cable, in their o...
Pro Sound XLR Cables?
I use Canare Star Quad for mic cables. Good stuff, and reasonably priced. For the most part, even "high-end" recording studios use regular pro-grade cabling for mics and interconnects, not esoteric stuff. Why not? It works, and it works superbly.

Stevemj: Thanks for the common sense approach. A further deficiency of Jon Risch's "explanation" that Kevperro posted is that Risch assumes that the conduction angle in the primary of a power amp's peak-rectification power supply will remain the s...
cable length
Dekay: there's no evidence of any sort of "ideal" length of cable other than the shorter the cable, the better. Period. For analog signals, the wavelengths of 20 Hz to 20 kHz range from about 15,000 kilometers to 15 kilometers, multiplied by the ca...
Blind Listening Tests?
Jostler3, the ABX page is no longer on the URL you cited. It's here: http://www.oakland.edu/~djcarlst/abx.htmIt's got very good documentation of the double-blind test process and explanations of the statistical analysis involved in evaluating the ...
AM tuner performance?
Unfortunately, the vast majority of AM tuners historically have used diode-type envelope detectors, which have inherent distortion, noise, and sensitivity problems. Most roll off the high end at 5 to 10 kHz to reduce adjacent-channel interference....
cable length
In any kind of cable--IC, speaker, or power--you generally want it the shortest that it takes to get between whatever points it's connecting. Of course, you'll want some slack to facilitate moving, installing, positioning, and such. But don't use ...
RCA vs XLR
I prefer XLR vastly over RCA primarily because it offers the possibility of operating with balanced lines. The risk of interference is so greatly reduced that it's the standard in professional audio: microphones, mixing consoles, equalizers, signa...
Running bi-wire cables backwards OK?
Okay, I see what you mean. "Terminations" was the wrong word; you meant networks, is that correct?
Running bi-wire cables backwards OK?
What does that mean, Bob_bundus? The electrical current flows in both directions regardless of the orientation of the wire.
Best speaker cables
Gregm, the optimum length for a speaker cable is "as short as you can make it." The shorter the speaker cable, the less shunt capacitance, less series inductance, and most of all, less series resistance.
