New to tuner for 91.7FM UW Madison WI
Marakanetz,There are two big variables with your question, one we (those of us out here in Audiogonland) can't possibly know and one we can at least guess at. Broadcast vs. streaming for any station will depend on the quality of the broadcast sign...
AM/FM set up for office
I own one of these:http://insigniaproducts.com/products/portable-audio/NS-HD01.htmlAnd it sounds great on analog or HD signals.David
FM tuners - Are they OBSOLETE ?
Here in Eugene, OR, we're blessed with 4! public radio stations, all of which use minimal or no compression, so it's definitely worth having an FM tuner here. Rock, jazz, blues, classical, old country, swing, just about every genre is represented ...
Perfect Debute Albums

AT&T to cap broadband usage. Streamers beware
Marty is absolutely right about privatization lowering the cost of bandwidth for everyone. I'm old enough to remember when a 56K frame relay circuit was $500/month and a T1 (1.5Mb) was $2,500/month! And the reliability stunk on both. I now get 10M...
help me to understand the gain
Less power output won't solve your issue - gain is separate from power. According to Stereophile, the DNA-1 has a gain of 32dB! That's really high, and a big part of your problem. I would investigate either a passive preamp or, if you like the Pri...
Vincent PHO-8? Jolida JD-9A,? Phono Pre's $350-500
My current phono preamp is the Jolida JD9, having started with the built-ins in my Advent 300 and NAD 7140 and moving through a Hagerman Bugle, Monolithic PS-2/HC-2b, and Vista Audio Phono 1. The JD9 was slightly better than all of them until I up...
td-01 chinese tonearm?
I'm not sure I'd agree that it's a similar concept to the Well Tempered arm. There can't be more than a drop or two of damping fluid in the well of the TD-01, and the contact area of the ceramic ball is very small. The amount of damping would be m...
Is centerclamp like TT Weights as good as TT maker
Weights and clamps work differently and are made for different applications. If you're going to use a weight, you need to make sure it won't adversely affect the suspension of your Townsend. If it will, you'll need to use a low mass clamp.David
Jolida JD-9 and Dynavector 23RS Question
I own the JD9, and unless the rest of your system has extremely low gain, the JD9 should accommodate just about any cartridge. Mine sounds great with every cartridge I've used. What leads you to believe it won't work with the Dyna 23RS?David
Do I need preamp?
Yes, you'll need a phono preamp.david
relationship between rec. and the other tubes?
Rectifiers can definitely alter the sound, but as always, it's system and circuit dependent. I agree that the 12AT7s will have the most effect. My 6SN7 preamp is also tube rectified, and a good NOS 5AR4 made a noticeable difference over the new pr...
long range wireless mouse suggestions
I'm guessing you have a way to get cabling from the room the PC is in to the room the TV monitor is in, as you must have a cable running from the PC to the monitor. As long as that's the case, get a USB wireless mouse and run a USB extension cable...
Phono Pre Kit Builders:Thoughts & Recommendations
I built a Bugle and it was terrific at 40 dB but pretty noisy at 60 dB, and Jim Hagerman said it really wasn't designed for high gain. I didn't have any medium output cartridges like your Grado, so I never tried it in the mid 50s. It might work, b...
how to change the tonearm cable?
Sumiko MMT has a DIN plug, so just take the bottom off the table, unplug the DIN to RCA cable, and plug in the DIN to XLR cable. Replace the bottom and you're done.David
