Spectral DMC 12, 20 or 30 preamp?
Yeah Sean, layout does matter as soon as you care about a bandwidth beyond a few hundred kHz. That is one of the things that set Spectral's design off from some others. In fact there is/was a PS Audio preamp that more or less borrowed the same cir...
Ever wonder why things are screwed up?
Yep, it's 4ft 8.5 inches, just measured!!
40hz ratings/speaker response
What happens when you put 20 Hz. into a speaker that rolls off at 40 Hz. is simply this: the cone moves a lot, there is some second, 4th, etc. harmonic reproduced, your amp works hard and may have reduced headroom if this coincides with a peak. MO...
40hz ratings/speaker response
Ursula66 wrote that her WATT/Puppy combo doesn't seem to have anything below 40 Hz. This is 100% true. Mr. Wilson's speakers have many things to commend them, bass isn't one of them. They do NOT have much output below 40 Hz, if they get there at a...
Spectral DMC 12, 20 or 30 preamp?
The *difference* between the DMC 12 and the DMC 20 *is* the split passive RIAA *and* a change in the board layout and materials... iirc the 20 used a foamed polypropylene pcb material. The gain stages were otherwise identical. Neither of them used...
Spectral DMC 12, 20 or 30 preamp?
I think the 20 has split passive RIAA, and better pcbs, but otherwise is pretty much a DMC 12 behind the scenes.Maybe a few other changes in the implementation details.I've never even seen a DMC 30, and this probably post dates Damien Martin's des...
I Need Help
Do this:With the power OFF for all of the amps except for thecenter channel - listen... IF it is still buzzy. Unplugfrom the wall, each amp's AC plug and see if the bzzz goesaway.alternately, take the center channel output with the other outputs N...
Noise Filters & ferrite beads....
IF the question is about ferrite beads on the output of a switching supply, the answer, is YES. But beads are too little - you want LARGER inductors. at least a PI filter, and maybe several sections of PI filter...Do not use ferrite beads on MOST ...
Is a Tube Amp Capable of High Current?
High Current amps are not "myth". The fact is that there are two good reasons for this so-called "myth" existing. The first is the case of speakers that actually have low impedance dips and/or are simply low impedance. In such cases amps that are n...
Ever wonder why things are screwed up?
Ok, I have to drive over some Conrail tracks later today. I will be measuring. :- ) _-_-bear
Ever wonder why things are screwed up?
Railroads aren't 4ft something wide....at least not in the US... but it's a nice story anyhow. It does illustrate what goes wrong with big old organizations that require compatibility back to the year one. Like IBM, and Microsoft (will if they keep...
How do you get the "real" feel of music?
An Expander is the *opposite* of what you want! Most live music today is played through a PS/SR system that has both dynamic limiters and compression. Expansion will make your system sound *less* dynamic for 99% of the program material!! (it's the...
What is the range of human hearing?
When I was still a teenager and before, and maybe up into my early 20s I could hear ULTRASONICS. Yes, it is true. The TV's 16.58khz was easy (is that the right freq?). When the Museum of Natural History was robbed by "Murph The Surf" and he took t...
Honest opinion's of the Mighty KLIPSCHORNS????
The K-horns are *very* room dependant in their performance in all regards. In the right room, the bass is phenomenal - in the wrong room, ick!Keep in mind at all times, this was a speaker system designed and intended for *monophonic* reproduction ...
Novice attempting to bi-amp. Help
Sean, the unused channel should probably be grounded, although that doesn't actually simulate operating conditions. So, I'd suggest alternately terminating the interconnect with another bit of local gear (like the output of a CD player not playing...
