Dunlavy SC IV A harsh high frequency
I agree with Rja. Something is definitely not right if you are blowing tweeters at that rate. I have just about every speaker model John ever designed and most of the units have worked perfectly for many years without replacing a thing. I have a s...
Best High End Audio Manufacturer???
I would like to thank everyone who has responded to this thread. What I've observed is that it's really hard to pick just one manufacturer, because (in truth) it's taken many talented individuals to corporately bring this hobby to the incredibly h...
Best High End Audio Manufacturer???
Plasmatech...just like the auto ratings, throw everything you value in the equation to come up with your pick. Envelope please!!
Burning question
I listened to a lot of digital systems at this years' Rocky Mountain Audio Show. 'Best of show' for me was the Audio Research Reference CD-9. To my ear it compared favorably with the finest Analog rigs.
Has biwire speaker cabling become "old" ?
Timrhu...good point about Dunlavy speakers having bi-wire terminals. On my SC-Vs I did a bi-amp arrangement with two Audio Research D200s and Audio Magic speaker cable. Sounded great. Now using higher grade single run Audio Magic cable with Marant...
who has the best recommended product reviews
I haven't read a truly 'candid' review in twenty years. I trust my own ears and have some faith in companies who have been doing it right for a long time. Mainstream magazines are the worst in that ad revenues are at risk with each review. The mos...
Exemplar Audio - What's Needed In High End Audio
My experience is that 'Taters' is right. I have been in this hobby for over 40 years and have built multiple SOTA systems from used components manufactured by companies that have been and will be around for the foreseeable future. An example is my...
ARC REF 5SE, CJ GAT or ?
The Krell(s) tend to be more analytical with great bottom end extension. I would look for a pre amp with more warmth. At your price point you pretty much can choose anything you want, so I wouldn't be too hasty about a choice but would try several...
Has biwire speaker cabling become "old" ?
I had a conversation with John Dunlavy a few years ago on this very topic. His position was that the only way a second set of cables would be of any value is if they had the exact electrical characteristics as the first. Since this is hard if not ...
Fess Up How much have you spent on this Hobby??
I probably should have clarified; out of the 150K (or so), a good part of that has been for source material. At this point, I'm pretty much set as far as equipment is concerned and will be investing in new digital source content options both for m...
Getting the Upgrade Bug Again
PLEASE...go to an Audio Show (or two) before shelling out the big bucks. There are so many excellent choices in high end audio these days. If you can afford to be discriminating, why not be. Half the fun is the journey!
Who do you credit for your love of mucic?
I really didn't have much of a choice. I was born into a musical family and handed a violin (fiddle) at the age of five. Every weekend we were off playing somewhere and then would tour some through the summer. Country/Gospel/ Bluegrass was pretty ...
Which amp to buy? ARC GS150 or Reference 150 SE?
At the level you are looking at, it's all good. ARC, however, has been around a long time and will be around in the future should you need servicing or take advantage of upgrades as they become available. Also, the GS series is just so good lookin...
Need recommendations.. Solo acoustic guitar CDs

Room treatment
There are a lot of relatively inexpensive products that can improve the performance of a system dramatically without going to the trouble and expensive of redoing a room. High-end 'tweaks' offer serious remedies for system upgrades. Do some resear...
