Digital Amplifier Questions
Kijanki...what a great response. Hearing and tech analysis agreeing on something. What a concept!
How Do You Feel about The Cable Game?
When John Dunlavy was alive, he had some very strong opinions about the 'cable game'. He would do extensive blindfold tests with a variety of high end cables to see if differences could be consistently detected and then compared that to much lower...
Digital Amplifier Questions
My experience has taught me that there is a vast difference in the approach that some manufacturers have taken with Class D technology versus others. An example would be Rotel vs Jeff Roland. Albeit, that we are talking about two companies targeti...
Tube life in preamp. Please help
The one thing that no one has mentioned is the cost of keeping tube gear on all the time. I had an ARC SP9 at one time and it wasn't drawing that much power, but it together with a pair of ARC M100 monos and we're talking $20 to $30 a month in pow...
Anyone using ARC Ref 5SE Preamp with McIntosh 275
The ARC Ref5SE and a McIntosh 275 is NOT, 'a-match-made-in- heaven'. Even if the impedance can be resolved, you are talking about performance characteristics on the opposite ends of the scale.
Best amp for $550 to mate with the following...
I'm using a 7 channel Emotiva amp in one of my systems. It started out sounding OK... but now that it has 100 hours or so on it I'm starting to be impressed. A lot of performance for the money!
CD vs internet and DAC
That's a good question and you'll probably get a variety of responses. My personal experience is that a CD 'fully tweaked' still sounds the best. 'Tweaking' is an art/science which can include a cleaning agent such as Optrix or Shinola, demagnetiz...
Power conditioners: Shunyata and PS Audio
Before buying either of these 'very pricey' units, I'd try Mapleshade's best power strip. I bought one of these more out of curiosity, only to find that it works very well for anything other than high-current monos which really need to go straight...
Advice on upgrade
If you haven't 'tweaked' the system with AC conditioning, isolation, room treatment, etc...I would do those types of things before changing out components. I've had a couple of systems similar to yours which benefitted greatly from modest priced '...
ARC Ref3 or McIntosh C2300/2500
A further thought on ARC vs McIntosh in general. I have heard a lot of demos with ARC components vs McIntosh components. These are two great companies with loyal followers. My personal experience, however, has been that with the exception of some ...
ARC Ref3 or McIntosh C2300/2500
The Ref3 in a heartbeat.
Audio - Post Divorce
On the first date with my wife (some 35 years ago), I had her sit down and listen to my system which was composed of Magneplanar Tympanny 1Cs, SAE electronics, a direct drive turntable and an M&K sub. I put on Electric Light Orchestra and turn...
Amp and preamp on same outlet?
Plug your amp straight into the wall and the preamp into a power conditioner of your choice along with the rest of your non-amplification components. Then enjoy your system, and consider the many excellent high-end tweaks which do so much more to ...
Help with System Musicality
Before you spend a lot of $$$ it might be that a Schumann Resonator could move the system in the direction you want to go. Acoustic Revive has the RR-777 and Kemp has the SR Plug. There are also units on E-Bay from other sources. I am using the ol...
Should I switch to a preamp with balanced outputs
I have experimented with all single-ended vs. all balanced. There are many factors that would influence the outcome, but in my test I actually preferred the single-ended option. As a result, I had a fairly lengthy talk with the cable manufacturer,...
