Who makes great active preamps ? Tube or solid state or hybrid.
That's good, many choices. You calmed me down. What about tube Japanese preamps ?And if having to choose one company that  makes both great preamps and power amps, besides I am sure some European solid state, what would your choice be ? VAC and CAT ?
Looking for more transparency.
Elizabeth confused audio system and garbage bin. It happens.
Do you have any concern for the environment when keeping your equipment 24/7 ?
I have no concern at all either, speaking about myself. I compensate with other things, more than enough. I do my share.

No class D, they are getting less expensive so there will be millions sold and that will make things even worse.

Well, this is audiophile forum, I didn't mention other activities. Not only wasteful but probably any equipment that needs it to sound best was not quite well designed. Sounds stupid to me. With my modest solid state integrated I hear no change in ...

fsmithjack, out of curiosity, if you don't mind, how much did you pay for the Soulution 530 ? How old is It ?For $55k it should be a hell of an integrated. Gryphon Diablo 300, something that I would want is $19.5k or so with optional phono stage.

Well, first I meant great not just excellent, and second I meant compared to their power amps. Sure, Lamm are excellent.

I don't think that you will settle for Pass after hearing the Soulution with right cabling. It is more likely that if you keep the Pass and sell the Soulution now you will soon sell the Pass too and will start all over again. You know what you str...
How often do you have to service your Studer or Otari deck ? Home not pro environment.
bdp24, I see, I misunderstood you. No, no intention to buy junk and make it perfect. Those decks’ preamp section is quite good but of course this step can be improved considerably. However, I would very rarely if ever play vinyl except when making ...

But you will, my boy. Cost of cables and cords is about 1/3 of the total. Two pairs of interconnects were bought new, speaker cables and four power cords used. Three sources - turntable, cassette deck and cd player, which I use very rarely.

There is another advantage, and it is a big one , to using open reel deck instead of turntable - you don't need active preamp, you run it directly to power amp. You record directly from phono and lose almost nothing. And of course you can run phon...
What are the weak points of Pass amps and pre-amps ?
A few say that Pass amps are better than preamps, not that preamps are no good. I heard the same about Rowland, Lamm and others. It appears that it is more difficult to make a great preamp than power amp. Who is going to make great preamps ? Let m...

bdp24, audiophile endeavor makes no economic sense whatsoever. People wear out $10k cartridges and $500 NOS tubes.

Buying from a reputable source can also be difficult or impossible. That's what I thought, if I use the deck for, say, thousand hours a year, I would need to have it looked over every five years or so.But, how long do the reproduction heads last, a...

Two things - hunting for master tape dubs and making compilations off records and even maybe some cds.
