Can you live with your current speaker until you die?
Without question, my custom built Tannoy HPD 315-based (12" Dual Concentric drivers, ca 1975, external custom crossovers, 192 lb. 150 liter enclosures) will be the ones to carry me to the end of my days. After eight years, they still have an abili...
Speakers for.....every type of music?
My speaker of choice is Tannoy, my first pair came in 1971, 12" Monitor Golds. I somehow got away from them, and 8 or 9 years ago I decided it was time for a return. On Ebay UK, I bought a pair of HPD 315 drivers (ca 1975), with crossovers, then c...
What do you LIKE BEST about your current audio system?
Elizabeth, what I like about my system is my great enjoyment of it every day, without feeling the need to either spend more on it, or even make any changes to it. The fact that I can enjoy it so much has a great deal to do with having a near-perfe...
Looking for speaker recommendations
Why not look into Tannoy? Their cabinets are beautifully made, and they are outstanding in sound quality. The drivers are Dual Concentric, and come in 10", 12", or 15" size with commensurate cabinet size increase as you go up the line.Best of luck...
What is the fascination?
Saving money is not the only reason to refurb an older idler-drive table. Some folks just enjoy taking something old, and making it new again (relatively speaking). I restored a Garrard 401, and mounted a Dynavector 501 (also a DIY restoration) on...
2way speakers
If you want better bass in a two-way, why not look at Tannoy? You don't mention a particular budget. The Tannoy Prestige line (especially the GR models) are particularly fine. I couldn't afford them so I built my own speakers using ca 1975 12" HPD...
Switching between 2 amps , 1 set of speakers?
I have a separate tube preamp that I use that is connected to my other amp which is an SET 300B. I have two sets of speaker wires/connections, so all I have to do is change speaker connections at the speaker. Quick and easy, although it may not be...
Best $40 I've spent...maybe ever
Stringreen, I have a quart size can of the stuff. Great product.Regards,Dan
Best $40 I've spent...maybe ever
You are very right. As we speak, I've got my two channel and my home theater system completely torn down, cables strewn all over the place. I'll clean every connection as the cables are placed back in service. Hell of a project, but it needed to b...
Fried crossover or bad tweeter?
Congrats on taking the plunge and doing it yourself. It's nice the parts are available.Well done!Regards,Dan
Fried crossover or bad tweeter?
I'm no technician, but, if you have the time, you could swap tweeters (or crossovers), if it's not too much work. That should tell you what to replace.Best of luck,Dan
The most fun you can have in audio is DIYing your own speakers
Eric, as the old saying goes, "you're preaching to the choir". Eight years on, and I wouldn't trade my custom Tannoy HPD's 315's for anything. They just float my boat in the right way. DIY made the experience even better. Not the prettiest to look...
Narrowed to 3: 802D3, Sopra 3, Reference 3
I suggest, since you like the KEF's, to try listening to Tannoys. Like the KEFs, they are Dual-Concentric, will image very well, and have great bass. Check and see what they have to offer in their current lineup.Regards,Dan
Monitor Audio Pl 300ii vs. KEF Reference 5
fast, my only remaining question is how far away from the wall are your speakers? The front/center of mine are 75", and toed-in so they intersect at my listening position. This has served me well for 7-8 years, though some folks don't have the sam...
Monitor Audio Pl 300ii vs. KEF Reference 5
fast, you don't mention the orientation of your speakers in the room. Are they situated in front of the short wall, or the other way? My listening room is somewhat similar, 16' X 34' with cathedral ceilings. There are no room treatments used, nor ...
