Akai 747 w/DBX question
I would demag the entire tape path. The key in demag'ing is to move the unit sloooowwwwly. If you move it fast across the heads very little demag will happen and you can actually increase the mag level on the heads. it will vibrate a little since ...
Questions from a Tube Preamp newbie
would agree with hifiman, the 12au7 series of tubes should last a very long time; not like power tubes where you'll get a few years out of them and they need to be  replaced. would also suggest not to rule out the industrial grade tubes such as th...
Akai 747 w/DBX question
I would suggest demag'ing the heads every so often. Otherwise you will lose high freq response. Just make sure you use a demager with a protective tip and move the demager SLOWLY, you want remove magnetic fields from the heads not add them. I dema...
Anyone in or near Ann Arbor?
you may want to consider an RIAA EQ playback LP and measure the output voltage of your phono stage for each freq before you do anything. Once you have a flat response, then you can decide if a change is needed.
Akai 747 w/DBX question
I would take a pass on the dbx unit. If you really feel you need noise reduction would look at one of the pro units, dolby A 363, or a Dolby SR unit. Other three options would be 1. get a set of half track heads for your 7472. install a Vishay foi...
Next step up from the Sumiko FT-3
simao, took a look at your phono pre. would still say the same, plus a few other upgrades. 1. replace load resistors with vishay VSR foils2. black cube appears to use a wall wart for power, replace with decent sized linear power supply. 3. replace...
Next step up from the Sumiko FT-3
I would not sell the FT3. pretty nice arm. I used to have both the FT3 and FT4. For a kilo buck, you might look at what you can do with your phono stage. did not mention what you were running, but first thing would be to add some vishay foil resis...
Manley Chinook or Any comparable Preamp?
I would pop for the chinook. the last year I was trying out a number of phono stages in the 2k to 5k range. The chinook is really good with MC or MM. takes a big jump if you rolll in some NOS valves for the 1st position.
DAC upgrade
would suggest you take a look at Denafrips PONTUS dac. 1800 bucks and can even do a trial period. if you are not happy you can send back.
Considering switching from Audio Research to PrimaLuna, troube with VS115 amp
would agree with Pokey. Have 4 PL amps, as well as numerous copies of tube amps from other mfgrs. The PLs sound good right out of the box, and as Kevin noted, all point to point wiring which you do not get with most of the US mfgrs. who use circui...
Dennis Had Inspire amps and preamps.
would agree with Wolf; I like the KT88s better than the 150s, and the PSVANE gray glass KT88s above all the others. For rectifiers, the VANE HIFI grade 5U4G is my favorite. also rolled VT229 KenRad and Sylvania chrome tops in the input stage, but ...
Replace CJ with new equipment
The quicksilver gear is nice stuff. But before you toss you CJ I would agree with  erik_squires. lots of options for the PV12 and premier amp. 1. move to a copper foil coupling cap from either Jupiter or Jensen. 2. drop the plate load resistors to...
12AU7 Genalex or Psvane for Cayin Hybrid Integrated H80A
another one to consider is the Raytheon black plates. They are open and extended without any brightness. In most apps, the 5814 should be an ok sub for a 12AU7, RCA black plate 5814s are also nice sounding tubes. Not knocking the GLs at all. They a...
Recommended Test Records
in addition to above, would suggest a NAB test disc. will tell you if you are even close to flat freq response.
can large (>10kVA) industrial transformers be adapted for use as audio trans
not enough info. you would need to know what the input and output voltages are. Based on their size, would guess they are step down from 480 to 120 or 240vac.
