Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
There are many variables but records will sound different from digital. I don't see the differences between media as being necessarily better or worse, but you can scale the differences between components and systems within a media playback system...
Turntable got absolutely crushed by CD
You just need to mess with it more.  There will come a time when playing records make sense.  There is a certain "stillness" to vinyl, and I find it's easier to engage with the music.Because of the critical initial conditions of the transducers an...
One speaker observation from the New York Hifi show.
Sit in your listening position and move the speakers around until it sounds good.  If moving them around is not an option, just put them where they have to go and deal with it.Think about your room before you buy speakers.  If you are really into ...
Thinking about a new, lower end CD Player
I have a Cambridge 640 that I use digital out to whatever DAC I'm using at the moment.  When the drawer stopped working, I took it out of the system and used an inexpensive Samsung Blu-Ray player (fortunately, I had the foresight to get one with a...
Flaws in this chain?
I use an Apple TV in my system and I can't tell the difference between it and an Airport Express, which does not resample my signal.  When I plug in my laptop directly to the DAC it still sounds the same to me.  Of course, I am limited to 16/44.1,...
Vinyl System Upgrade Path Recommendations
I built a dyna-kit ST-70 back in the 70’s. I still have it, but retired it long ago and moved on. Don’t know much about the Eico, but I’m guessing it is a somewhat earlier vintage. If you have kept it up (tubes, sockets caps, driver board, etc.) i...
My Amp is Broken - Not Sure What to Do - Any Recommendations?
Be sure you don't kill yourself when you short a filter cap to the chassis (seriously).I used to be a do-it-yourselfer, but as I got older and wiser, I realized the experience, knowledge, and training involved was not worth the expense. Those of yo...
Music Server/Player for NOS R2R DAC
My guess is a $25.00 Chromecast Audio will get the job done, if you have a smartphone or a computer.  I don't think you will hear much of a difference between it and your Atoll (or anything else for that matter). Look at the BlueSound products if ...
WHY DO SOME AUDIOPHILES THINK YOU ARE BRAGGING WHEN YOU ARE SHARING?
Well you're either justifying the cost of expensive gear or declaring that your budget gear is just as good as the expensive stuff.  Happily I fall into the second category!
My Amp is Broken - Not Sure What to Do - Any Recommendations?
Look in the Yellow Pages and you will find dozens of competent amp techs down the street from you willing to work for $25.00/hr.  Or buy a new amp.
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
This tonearm is worth having, but I'll have to pawn my Patek Philippe Supercomplication to afford it.
nice felt glove for moving speakers and not getting skin oil on the wood?
Paint the cabinets with gloss enamel you can wipe off.  No finish, no matter how beautiful, is worth it if it causes stress!
Advice on buying good CD player that will outperform my Primare cd31
I am solidly in the "transport + DAC" camp these days.  The DAC in the Primare should be wonderful, so it may be you just don't like the flavor of the R2R DAC in the unit.  I would try out different DACs before I spent too much money on an all-in-...
Why do people buy preamps if they can directly connect amp to stereo source/phone/PC/tv?
lajollaplamars:  All preamps introduce their own sonic signature, some more than others.  I have not heard the E. E. miniMax preamp, but it was once on my shortlist for a relatively inexpensive tube pre that I could roll tubes with. For those that ...
Does this image give you claustrophobia?
Impressive display of wealth.  Sound-wise, I'll bet my 10k system blows this one away!  (Caveat:  my system in my room). It's all about the acoustics of the room and speaker placement!  This system seems to commit every sin in the book.
