An observation about "Modern" classical music.
Can't sing?

Shubertmaniac: no, serialism is by definition atonal. It has no tonic. Sometimes a perception of tonality can appear temporarily between related tone rows, but it is never permanent. And I'm afraid it's not correct that serialism uses "all twelve ...
Don't let this happen to you
Personally, I love it when people clap between mvmts. It's a signal that more of the uninitiated are experimenting with classical music! There are times when I wish the symphony were more like a football game. It would be awesome to have people sta...

On the contrary, I'm doing everything I can to suggest ways to improve your perception of "this elite world". I wish you would listen to the pieces I've recommended. I think their appeal is universal. If you're not willing to, that's your loss.

"This thread is supposed to be about thoughtful analysis." Exactly. This is why I've suggested that you listen to and read about a broader spectrum of modern music before continuing to throw out simplistic generalizations that belie the complexity...

Eldartford: I see a lot of hypocrisy in stating your musical preference and allowing for disagreement, but then defining "skill", a value judgement, in terms of your own musical tastes. You claim that this "skill" is manifested in "inventiveness w...

I'm listening to Penderecki's Auschwitz Oratorio as we speak. This is as moving and as viscerally captivating (not to mention disturbing) as anything I've ever heard. Give it a try if you're ready for a very intense musical experience. I'm not sur...
Just bought a nitty gritty, hear no difference.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I'm using the fluid and applicator supplied by nitty gritty. I've also tried some DiscDoctor D4+ fluid. No difference. Photon46: as noted before, I've vacuum cleaned a large range of records, from perfect ones with ...

Hi Muzikat,Thanks for your response. The records I've cleaned have varied in dirtiness from just a bit of dust to old stains, and everything in between. I haven't heard a difference on a single record. My turntable is ok, a KD-500 from the late 70s...
At Last Bach Really Hits the Spot
Most of Glenn Gould's recordings are wonderful, especially the early ones. Also check out Wanda Landowska- she is the matriarch of the historical performance movement and recorded some very interesting performances.
At Last Bach Really Hits the Spot
There's so much... Check out his fugues. Many are absolutely amazing, and they revolutionized musical form.
Mini Monitors - Dynaudio and JM Labs
You're right, my mistake. Strange you're having problems there. Sorry I can't offer better advice...

I'm not going to make any specific recommendations, but if you're worried about sweet spot size, why not consider something time/phase cohorent? None of the speakers you've mentioned are (though I think someone mentioned Green Mountain as a possib...
Folk/Rock choices that are well recorded
You might take a look at Nickel Creek- some of it freaks me out with its "fusion-ness" but some is really great.
