Oh no, there's metal in your records!
The effects of magnetic particulates in old carts makes one wonder if there is an argument in favour of replacing or reconditioning cartridges more frequently than we would normally have considered? (A slightly off-topic comment I realise....)
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
Dear Jonathan,Many thanks for rescuing me! :)(Lyra were not the suppliers of my original information BTW but it was very kind of Jonathan to elaborate on this problem. Top man!) Having given the earlier question (ie the source) some thought I real...
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
It's quite easy really. You go to the experts and ask them. Try it yourself & report back. :)
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
Here we go again. Nice try ;)
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
The plot thickens… According to one of the World’s top cartridge makers/builders/re-builders, acquired magnetic particulates inside the cartridge generator are not an occasional occurrence (as I would have thought and implied earlier) but a surp...

Lewm,Are you suggesting that the widespread and longstanding concerns over non-virgin vinyl are merely an Urban Myth?Kind regards,
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
Very interesting article Whart. After my local record shop had been refurbished in the mid-70s I remember buying an LP that had half a packet of small headed nails inside the sleeve. It brought new meaning to the idea of finding metal fragments in ...
Oh no, there's metal in your records!
My guess is the OP is referring to the existence of non-virgin vinyl(?)   In the early 1970s some records were composed of this re-processed vinyl which sadly included fragments from the tungsten steel grinder blades of the machines used to ch...
Why do turntables sound different?
NKonor, you are most welcome. :) :) Here is a link to the full(?) article.   http://www.iar-80.com/page12.html   To make your T/T selection headache even greater, take a look at this You Tube clip. Even if you pipe this through a budget amp...

Why do turntables sound different?
The Rockport treatise should be compulsory reading for anyone either contemplating the design of a turntable or who is merely interested in this issue. I am not a designer of HiFi equipment but it is a compelling, albeit lengthy, read. The most sa...
Cartridge for Technics SL-1200GAE
Interesting Johnny. What phono stage are you using with the AT150 and are you using shorter ICs?Thanks,Bill
Help... my turntable is alive!
Dear Cleeds,Yes you're quite right. It's unlikely the OPs problems would be compounded by this but it's a possibility. If fact you've inspired me to acquire a spare for my own turntable even though it's not too old.Back when I had a Linn the oldest...
Help... my turntable is alive!
Dear Clearthink,The OP does not need to buy a new belt. The solution is simply to wash it in warm soapy water then rinse & dry and it will be good as new.Have a good day.Bill.
Help... my turntable is alive!
Good suggestion Dover.I too considered that at the time but wasn't sure if it would produce the sound the OP refers to.Definitely worth checking if there's daylight between them at all times.Bill.
