Recommendations for CD Player/DAC Combo
tyan42, FWIW I believe that the current interest in using seperate transports and DAC’s arises from the wide use of on-line sources which require a DAC. So if you had to get a DAC, why not get a transport. I do not use on line sources and have an ...
Recommendations for CD Player/DAC Combo
While I could argue at some length about speaker placement (and set up) in general, and yours specifically, I see no reason to do so. You are happy, your wife is happy, you are listening to music you enjoy, not much else counts, does it. Peace.
Recommendations for CD Player/DAC Combo
Stereo5, Not ’mounted’ for sure I agree, but placed immediately in front of the wall for sure (for folks interested they can look at the pictures of your system which you have posted). Other than the back injury you would have probably incurred ha...
Recommendations for CD Player/DAC Combo
stereo5, In the spirit you evince in making your comments about Liz’s use of her CDP, I can’t understand why you would be really spendy on your system yet place your speakers on the wall where, presumably, you will not hear  what your speakers wer...
Recommendations for CD Player/DAC Combo
Like Liz I use a cheap spinner(s) plugged into my Marantz' DAC. The reason is simple - My system operates all day but I only listen to it critically for a few hours in the evening. Why burn up a built in spinner for 'background' music? It has two ...
Classical Music for Aficionados
Learsfool, +1. "I'm not an anti-semite, some of my best friends are Jews." A more common apologist's self serving statement perhaps, but it must be hard to love Germany and its occupants and not say something. I recently watched a program involvin...
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs
Another new (for you perhaps) symphony that is highly regarded and enjoyed by most, is Sibelius' Symphony #2  conducted by Osmo Vanska with the Minnesota Orchestra on a BIS SACD. It includes another relatively accessible performance of Symphony #5...
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs
A couple of very high quality and relatively modern recordings of excellent performances -Mahler Symphony #1 on Telarc by Zander. This disc includes a wonderful rendition of Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. The sound quality is excellent. The prog...
Classical Music for Aficionados
Welcome Learsfool, Goody goody, some new music (to me) to look forward to exploring, i.e. Corigliano and Hindermith which I have never heard. Learsfool, I agree re Strauss - Baumann's version has always been enough for me. As for Brahms, while I h...
The Best Piano Works of the 20th Century
I overlooked Prokofiev’s. :-(  FWIW I highly prize Chiu’s 9 CD traversal of all of his music for solo piano including some transcriptions. I also overlooked Rachmaninoff’s 24 Preludes and Sonata #2.
The Best Piano Works of the 20th Century
Ravel's - Gaspard de la nuit and Debussy' Preludes. Both are post 1900 as are most of these composers music for solo piano. Their music should not be missed.
A way to listen to a large collection
rvpiano, an interesting approach. Somewhat similar to mine, but a tad more arbitrary I think. I too have a huge collection accumulated out of curiosity which has only rarely been purged of anything other than musical trash. (I don't own a recordin...
insurance and shipping with UPS
File in Small Claims Court. That might get them off their butt and pay your loss. If not you can always go thru with it. It is a pretty simple process.
WD 40 to remove scratches on vinyl !
Lets just say that putting WD 40 on records actually helped smooth out the grooves (and I'm not saying that!) anyone want to take a crack at what kind of damage might WD40 do to the stylus/cartridge? :-)
1970's Audio Research Equipment, worth having?
Harry, FWIW, be sure to hear the D115II before you buy it. I had one with my 'matching' SP10 - it was a disappointing experience. Not the SP10 - I kept it for 30 years, but I found the ARC lacked warmth and maintanence, both biasing and replacing ...
