How to remove harshness from my digital gear
Almarg:in your advice to me re: ground loop hum, you stated that cheater plugs are to be used TEMPORARILY. If their use stops the hum... why can that not be the cheap, easy permanent solution? Can damage or something be caused? Thanks for your advice.
How to remove harshness from my digital gear
Steve at Emperical Audio:I know I have a great deal of ground loop hum (audible from the speakers at all times). How do i get rid of it?
Reviewing the Reviewers - and the decline of HiFi
Tubegroover:good points. It seems we agree (at least i think we do) --- that the context for professional review of audio equipment whereby the review would be of value (not biased, not absolute but relativistic, etc) simply does not exist and lik...
Reviewing the Reviewers - and the decline of HiFi
for a review to be of value the following conditions must be met: a) the reviewer be at a non-profit that does not advertise, b) the reviewed equipment must not come directly from the Manufacturer but be purchased in the manner we as consumers wou...
Well-produced recent jazz cd's - recommendations?
the German label Nagel Hayer has put out 40 or so CD's in the past 20 years --- all phenomenal. Most of them are recorded live --- with the best sonics of any live jazz ever recorded. And wow... there is some awesome music on that label. I general...
Best Jazz pianist
to kt88el134 -- Charles Mingus is a bass player... he does not play piano.
Best Jazz pianist
Ahmad Jamal is absolutely a stunningly excellent pianist. He is melodic, original, fun and evocative. He tops my list... closely followed by a radically different pianist, Thelonius Monk.
"What's The Best Value Speaker In $5k-$10k Range?"
Montana EPS2's are also excellent and, if used, can be had for under 5K --- and compete upper middle of the pack against 10-12K speakers. Used they are an awesome deal.Used Vandersteen speakers at all price points are extraordinary values too.
Does your system sound better than most demo's?
Perhaps the reality is just this.... there is essentially NO correlation between cost of a stereo system and the performance of the system... at least after a certain level.I have heard (at shows) $100-200,000 systems (dozens of them)that, on aver...
Tubes/SS Power Amps?
Regarding Stereophile magazine... I dumped that magazine years ago when it went overly political and vulgar. Using curse words in reviews and making public policy/political commentary in an audio review magazine was crazy. The writing was pedantic...
want to hook up 2 spkrs for each left and right.
neither. If you have a preamp out, take the signal from the preamp out to a second integrated amplifier and hook your Mythos speakers to that integrated. This way, there is no extra load on your initial amp, there will be no impedance issues at al...
What's your view on blind testing?
if a double blind test performed correctly (10-20 participants or more, suitable long listening sessions, properly administered questions, etc.)reveals no statistical difference in sound in a comparison between, power cords, cables, etc. --- then ...
Just Ordered...
I have used an Ayon Spirit II 30 watt triode/55 watt pentode integrated amp on these speakers and the two are exceedingly well matched. Vandersteens with tubes are great. Very fluid, smooth and yet dynamic and exciting. I'd advocate tubes. That sa...
Listener fatigue: what does it really mean?
my take is this. Go to a live acoustic jazz concert in a great sounding hall... and after an hour and 45 minutes you will be fatigued. If the emotional content, the degree of engagement in the music is high, then after a time (typically 1.5 hours ...
Recording quality by decade
The jazz recordings made from 1958-1963 were, in general, recorded with better sound than in any other time period (amazingly, including even today). Modern jazz recordings do not have (generally) the stereo imaging of the classic recordings. Toda...
