Or, one of those tables that has a built in preamp which wasn't bypassed or switched out, let the stylus fall on the record...I can envision that easily.

I've been promoting these for the past two months on a couple of threads here. Bought a box of them and they work great, sound great. Gave a few to audio buds and they concur improvement in sound of amplification components.

I think the front end got fried by his connecting the inputs to a line level source. Preamps can be permanently damaged this way. You need to have it repaired if you care about capturing any of the value of it in the future. See if you can get the... 
Full Range under $5k-ish
My vote is for Vandersteen as described above, used Thiel 2.4s (I own them) or, if you can find a pair, Meadowlark Kestrels or larger.

CD diode lasers are about 780 nm which is in the infrared and is not visible. Our vision falls off greater than about 633 nm or so. Cheaper, more recently developed 405 nm diode lasers in the violet allowed development of blueray. DVD is 650 nm or...
