What are the characteristics quality recordings?
I've always wondered, Bufus, why I have to turn Pearl Jam CD's WAY DOWN when I play them. They are so much louder than my other CD's. Is that due to "normalization, compression, etc..."?Or just maybe the Ed Vedder honeymoon is over for me... sigh....
There Ought To Be A Law, Or At Least A Rule
Tire kickers do eventually buy something, don't they? Also, businesses had better not assume that e-mailer=tire kicker. It's the way now, and they're gonna lose business and then go out of business.I e-mailed a high end company about their product...
How do you cope with dust build up ?
What about inside components? In the case of large solid-state amplifiers, the top of the component is usually a grille. I'm sure a fair share of dust has gotten in there.
Dual-Disc Destined to fail? This reporter thinks so
I was at Tower records today and saw the R.E.M. dualdisc reissues out there, ON SALE, for $22. Twenty-two American? No thanks.
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
It seems to me that the digital volume control direct into an amp, in this case, is a little too bright and harsh. I am currently playing through my Birdland Odeon-Ag DAC with far more satisfying results. The drawback, as I have said, is that I ca...
What are your favorite SACDs
Elton John has the best multi-channel SACD's in the pop/rock category, in my opinion. Also up there is "Sea Change" by Beck. I've been listening to a lot of The Kinks on SACD. As far as sound goes, they are good, but not "reference". However, thes...
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
Thanks for your input, everybody. I'm gonna go with the Blue Circle BC21.1. I'll let you know how it sounds.Cheers.
Is SACD a dead format?
I think that Sony's embrace of DualDisc was the clear message for me that they are moving on. Too bad. I think SACD is a fantastic format and there are around 3000 titles available which would more than double my cd collection if I bought them all...
Good match with Sonus Faber Grand Pianos
The_kid is right. 90db @ 6ohms. And my 55wpc amp did sound very good. I've learned, however, that input sensitivity ratings are not necessarily a good indicator that the speakers will be well-served by lower-power amps. Consider this... I have 5wp...
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
Funny you should say that, Lousyreeds1. The Birdland DAC even says "24/192/SACD" on the front panel! Birdland was hoping to provide an upgrade path someday, but it's not likely forthcoming. I would appreciate any information about an audiophile qu...
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
Something else to chew on... this is my upstairs system and there is only one source component. Since I don't need the source switching functions of a pre-amp, is there another alternative to the digital volume control besides a pre-amp?
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
So, Lousyreeds1, a pre-amp is the way to go?
cdp digital volume control or preamp?
Thanks for the responses so far. I've searched old threads and found many references, but not one thread specifically devoted to this debate. If you can find one, put a link to it in this thread. Thanks. I've read that the digital volume control d...
Good match with Sonus Faber Grand Pianos
Just as a follow-up... I switched from a 55wpc amp to an 110wpc amp with the Sonus Fabers. BIG difference for the better. Much better control over the speakers.
Could somebody please explain
Bartok will clear the room? Play Schoenberg in the other room, then. In all seriousness, I've been listening to Bartok for so long that I forgot that many still consider him to be "one of those modern composers. Yuk." IMHO, he stands with Stravins...
