Ferrous damping weight OK?

I've got an 8lb shot put that sits in a nice cork ring...it's some kind of object de art, and the shot is made out of ferrous iron/steel.

Bad idea to use it as a damping weight?

It does not do any harm. Your shot put should be fine on an equipment case.
