Michael |
Ya gotta have The Allman Brothers Band cranking. Ramblin' Man, Blue Sky, Melissa, etc....etc.... |
North Mississippi Allstars-Shake Hands with Shorty.Great Rock'in Slide Guitar! And more early Allmans. And when your in Mississippi Standing at the Crossroads, Of Course Robert Johnson.......and The Great Elmore James.Enjoy The Grits n'Gravy....Catch some live Blues if you can and Stop by a Church and listen to some gospel music,an experience you will never forget........ |
|
Live? Hmmm... If you can do without live, these will get you started:
Allman Brothers - Beginnings and Eat A Peach
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd and Second Helping
Molly Hatchett - Molly Hatchett
38 Special - Wild Eyed Southern Boys and Rockin' Into the Night
All these bands have live albums and greatest hits collections. I tend to be an album purist. |
10-22-06: Timrhu Could REM make the list? No. If you have to ask why, then you don't understand Southern Rock. .Catch some live Blues if you can and Stop by a Church and listen to some gospel music,an experience you will never forget........ Jdlepera (System | Threads | Answers) Brother, this dude is lookin' for road tunes...to play in his car. Good suggestions otherwise, though. |
To clairify the above post. The Allman Bros Eat A Peach album is mostly Live recorded at The Filmore along with The Entire "Live at The Filmore East" Album.Live On The orginal lp Sides 2 and 4 -Mountain Jam. Side 3, The 1st 2 songs were live also-One Way Out and Trouble no More.JD |
Guess I shoulda put the LOL after my question. Hows about some Wet Willie? |
Marshall Tucker Outlaws Dixie Dregs Blackfoot Little Feat Henry Paul Band
I think there all 70's and have live albums, maybe not. |
Good list Mattybumpkin.
And remember Charlie Daniels Band - Devil Went Down to Georgia (from the album Million Mile Reflections).
Damn. Want some company on the roadtrip, Phasecorrect? All we need is a case of Wild Turkey. |
|
Tvad...thanks for the offer my kind friend...my company consists of my very attractive(and curvy) younger blonde fiance...and since man can't live on love alone...some Bookers,Makers Mark, and Knob Creek...mint juleps...her I come...yeeehawwww! |
I recently played Marshall Tucker- Where we all belong. It sounded real good on vinyl too, and great music to boot. |
some Bookers,Makers Mark, and Knob Creek...mint juleps...her I come...yeeehawwww! Phasecorrect (Reviews | Threads | Answers) That's way too high-tone for Southern Rock! When I was at Georgia Tech in 1979, all the good 'ol boys drank Wild Turkey. Jack Daniels was only for special occasions. :) |
Phase/Tvad,
Can I hitch a ride? Of course I would bring the Turkey 101, none of that panty waist stuff. |
Whoo-hoo!...that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! I'm fixin' to pick up a bucket o' chicken, some Skoal and a spit cup! Phasecorrect, I hope your fi-an-cee is up for some comp'ny! |
Little Feat -Waiting for Columbus - Live Elvis! |
Ho hum... The 70's are over! Move on! I'll take s'more dat dark meet, n' pass the chitlins:
16 Horsepower, Sackcloth 'n' Ashes

Ha Ha Ha. I was just in a little bar in the "deep south" last week. The Allmans came on and people cheered. They love their Allman Brothers.
Jax2, don't forget the hog nuts!
Phasecorrect, If you want to get current maybe you could check out Widespread Panic. |
nothing makes it feel like the south quite like the Allman Bros. Another of my favorites from down here are Drivin N Cryin. Not exactly Classic Rock, but late 80's. Try Fly me Couragous Rob |
How about "The Band' and "Graham Parson".
The top three by a wide margin and in order of greatness are The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Marshall Tucker Band. ABB's, "Live at Fillmore East" is a masterpiece by any standard.
As a Georgian let me just throw in couple of others: The Georgia Satellites, Drive By Truckers, The Black Crows, and The Atlanta Rythym Section. (REM... definitely not).
BTW, I saw Hank III this weekend and all I can say is: WOW. The band consisted of a steel guitar, a fiddle, a drummer, three guitars and a stand up bass, playing what I would describe as heavy speed metal rock. Now, that's southern rock! There is great live music in Athens, Ga... so y'all stop on by ya hear.

to truly take in the local flavor/culture...just use your radio |
Black Oak Arkansas Wet Willie Leon Russell Dr. John |
Try on some Ry Cooder, the soundtrack for "Paris Texas". It's not live but you'll be glad you did. Maybe some Doug Sahm and his Texas Tornadoes. Also the Los Lonly Boys Have a great trip! |
10-22-06: Timrhu Guess I shoulda put the LOL after my question.
Oops. Sorry... As a Georgian let me just throw in couple of others: The Georgia Satellites, Drive By Truckers, The Black Crows, and The Atlanta Rythym Section. (REM... definitely not).
Lokie (Threads | Answers) Lokie, those are some great pulls! I hadn't thought of ARS in a long while. Great music. My favorite Atlanta band at the time was The Brains. No, not Southern Rock, but southern new wave rock... Cyndi Lauper had a hit with "Money Changes Everything". I liked The Brains' version better. |
The Marshall Tucker Band. I heard them live at a concert and they were sooo good. Some of the members have passed on, but the band is still out there recording and playing. Sandra |
Johnny Cash / Live at Folsom Prison |
tvad...although I am a generous man by nature...sharing my women aint one of them! thanks for the suggestions...Im looking forward to seeing CHarleston and Savannah! thanks boys to all! |
