VPI Prime noise issue solved (wasn't the Prime's fault:)

Thanks to everyone for all of the suggestions as I wrestled with my VPI Prime hum issues.  Turned out it had nothing to do with the table.  The one part of my system I forgot to mention was the Eagle PSU speed control.   Apparently the unit causes all of the hum.  I bought it at the same time as the Prime, so I just hooked it all up together.  Tonight I plugged the VPI straight into the wall - almost dead silence.

Too bad that the speed control causes so much noise (I tried different PCs, outlets, positioning, etc.).

Thanks for all the help!

All that really matters is that Scott resolved the problem and his system is working correctly.
So Eagle PSU works similar to prescription: while curing one problem the other problem(s) may reveal + side effects.
As your dealer if Eagle PSU is good for you!
Yes, you are right that I owe VPI an apology - obviously their product was well designed and wasn't causing the problem.  I just overlooked the outboard PSU as a possible source of hum since the VPI motor is not connected to the plinth and the hum was present whether the motor was on or off.  In any event - I didn't mean to cast dispersions on any manufacturer or dealer.  Was just trying to solve a problem.  Phoenix Engineering responded immediately to my email last night, and I'm going to try some solutions they suggested to ground the power supply of the speed controller.

Thanks, Scott
@smrex13 no worries, things happen.  Overall just glad you got everything resolved and can enjoy the Prime the way you're supposed to.  Good example of our concerns of third party products.  Lots of great third party products but we can never truly vouch for what it may or may not do.

@czarivey  love that post!  To be PC I want comment on that further :)

Happy listening!
These things happen, I have been diagnosing crazy problems for almost 40 years and you would not believe what can cause noise in a system.  I remember one guy who had a hum and no matter what we did it would not go away, he moved his table 15" and it was gone.  Apparently there was a power cable in the wall right behind his interconnects and they picked up the radiation!!!  When you amplify things almost 1000 times you never know where the noise will come from.
