Yes, you are right that I owe VPI an apology - obviously their product was well designed and wasn't causing the problem. I just overlooked the outboard PSU as a possible source of hum since the VPI motor is not connected to the plinth and the hum was present whether the motor was on or off. In any event - I didn't mean to cast dispersions on any manufacturer or dealer. Was just trying to solve a problem. Phoenix Engineering responded immediately to my email last night, and I'm going to try some solutions they suggested to ground the power supply of the speed controller.
