I would have to say the old original AC9 is kind of ’muffled’ sounding compared to the new AC14SE MKII Signature, NOW. It is 12 or more years old. I just do not remember when I bought it. Long time ago fer’ sure. (before my last move 11 years ago)
In the recent few years, I have alternated moving that powercord from conditioner to amp, and back and forth, since it changed the sound a little. Smoother from conditioner. Now the ’muffled’ part is pretty minor. But, compared to the new Signature, very noticeable from my Magnepan 20.7s.
You know minor stuff does not become noticeable until you can compare it. Plus the recently bought self made cord really did not improve (clarity or bass performance) on the AC9 either.
I bought some AC9SE later, maybe 8 years ago?, and I possibly* could check t see if they sound different then the AC9 does now. Back when I bought them, some places AC9SE did sound better, and other places no difference. *possibly but not probably, since I confess I am pretty lazy unless I really want to do something.I had also bought early AC14SE, and on the preamp, the AC9SE sounded better than the 14SE back then when I first got them.
Added/ Many years ago I had some AudioQuest Midnight speaker cable, which the insulation started to go 'gummy' after many years. And that changed the way the cable sounded too. Perhaps something similar? in the early AC9 may have happened? And some more than others? Chemical formulation matters, and that may be a part of it . Though I do not know. Someone would have to cut an old AC9 to inspect the insulation.
