Do we really need anything more than 8" woofer and 1" tweeter for medium size room?
I run dual 15" woofers at home. My room is 17' x 22'; which is about an average size. They sound great in there. I don't have neighbors I can disturb so I play as loud as I want.At work, we use a little monitor with dual 6" high excursion woofers,...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
With regards to the Shearer, while solving a lot of problems of the prior art in its day, it also had problems of its own. Many of these were addressed in the Altec VOTT designs. And they were pretty well universally acknowledged as improvements. ...
Phono/preamp/amp chain. One of them tube the others SS. Which one?
If using a LOMC cartridge, my preference would be for an all-tube phono and line stage and a solid state amp, if the situation somehow was able to demand that one be solid state and the other tube.I would not go with a solid state phono section. T...
5% THD to .000 THD SOUND
^^Well if he has a lot of gain (and a lot of feedback), has kept RFI out of the feedback loop and is paying attention to phase margins, it should work. At the onset of clipping, the clipping behavior will not be graceful- that can't be avoided. Th...
Setting cathode bias in my tube amps manually, how accurate must I be?
George's comment is correct. If the amp were cathode bias, no adjustment would be needed. Are the tubes stressed by being off the bias target setting? What would be good plus-or-minus numbers be for each? Why did one designer choose manually set...
5% THD to .000 THD SOUND
Atmasphere, I’d like your opinion on Bruno Putzey’s latest class D amp design philosophy. I’ve read that he once held the same view as you do regarding negative feedback producing random upper order harmonics, but he’s now broke with that orthodox...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
According to the same website that speaks of the Shearer loudspeaker the Voice of the Theater was an improvement over the earlier design (http://www.audioheritage.org/html/profiles/altec/vott.htm). The reasons why and what was done are outlined at...
Atmasphere amps trustable?
^^ Thanks for that, I don't recall ever seeing that page before. It has some omissions (probably should have mentioned GAS and BAT, no mention of Graaf, who was the only Circlotron amp manufacturer to employ the Cecil Hall circuit in modern times)...
What makes an amp sound more direct ?
Mapman, Thanks for your comments!I think the goal should be to have the illusion of the performance being in the "room" with the listener. Realistically, this is best achieved with dynamic, high current capable speakers hooked to fully balanced...
tt ground to phono section. solid copper?
The ground is there to make sure the tone arm (which shields the cartridge wiring) is properly grounded so it won't impart noise to the signal. Any wire will work fine.
Atmasphere amps trustable?
I have thought about matching these with my single-driver speakers but reluctant to do so based on previous experience. If you are going to run a lower-powered speaker like a Lowther, its in your best interest to install a speaker protection fuse ...
What makes an amp sound more direct ?
'Direct' is a term that I don't really understand, but I do understand that when we got rid of the feedback in our amps, they seemed to sound much more like real music. Palpable, with all the instruments more distinct and available to the ear, if ...
What is more accurate: magnetic anti-skating, or barrel weight attached a fishline?
Hold your left arm out in front of you (horizontally) with your palm facing toward the right.• Bend your wrist so your fingers point further to the right, so it resembles the headshell/cartridge offset.• Have someone tug on your fingertip in a d...
Loudspeakers have we really made that much progress since the 1930s?
I noticed no one has mentioned the Heil Air Motion transformer; that came out in the 70's I believe, and there were some two way speakers that utilized it. Although I liked the highs that two way produced, the mid-range just wasn't mellow enou...
What is more accurate: magnetic anti-skating, or barrel weight attached a fishline?
Dear Ralph (Atma-sphere), I beg to differ slightly with your analysis. For a typical pivoted tonearm that is mounted such that the stylus overhangs the spindle and the headshell has an offset angle, there will always be some skating force, eve...
