DACs: Airport Express vs waveterminal vs mini-dac
I live in the mountains in central Oregon. 7 miles to the nearest town of 1000.

Unfortunately I dont have a MAC laptop, and I probably will not buy one. I will look into borrowing one for this.

Bought an AirPort Express and I will be modding it soon... I will let you all know if it is as good as the Transit on a PC.
DAC's for the money?
Mods are all listed on my webpage, but I get new devices to modify almost weekly. In the last week I started modding dAck! and Scott Nixon TubeDAC, and these are not even on my website yet.The process is that the customer usually ships their equip...
Silly Question...does a transport have a "sound" ?
Absolutely, no question. I've modded a lot of transports and even stock, they vary significantly. It certainly has to do with the signal edge-rates and the output impedance accuracy, but even when these are "fixed", the sound is still different. I...

One thing about the Transit - I use it with Foobar player and ASIO plug-in. These are critical on a PC to get the quality out of it. I also playback exclusively with 24/96 through my DAC. This makes all the difference. Leaves all transports in the...
I want a change, but what?
Stereo - 0.5m is a no-no. I cannot even use this length on my modded transports. Only the fastest risetime S/PDIF can use a 0.5m. Not surprised that it sounds worse.

DAC's for the money?
Yes, mod the Pioneer. The Birdland is one of the best-sounding stock DAC's. dAck! is also very good stock. The MFA3 24 is okay, but not as good stock as the DAC's above.I would recommend using the toslink for movies - get a good glass fiber cable, s...

The Edirol is probably the best choice for iMac. An AES/EBU interface can easily be added to the Edirol with mods, as well as improving its jitter performance. Just a short cable hanging from it with a XLR connector attached.BTW - Edumke - Did you...
Apple Airport Express Very Cool Product
Yes, Toslink is inferior. That's why I mod all of these converters to have a coax S/PDIF output, with a short cable attached. If the Airport Express output wired USB, then you would still need a USB to S/PDIF wired converter. The main advantage of ...

Transit does not upsample to 48 kHz. I can program Transit to do 44.1 or 24/96 and it passes iTunes, MP3 and AC3. It uses a custom driver that bypasses Windows Kmixer.Transit is probably not the best solution for iMac. I have heard that the driver...
Audiophile USB to PCM
If you are wanting to go USB to coax S/PDIF, why not just do only that? The M-Audio Transit or the Edirol boards can be modded to give you virtually jitter-free digital out. Either one can also be installed inside a DAC, eliminating the S/PDIF cab...
DAC's for the money?
You player is actually one of the best players to mod. Makes a great transport. IF you get an outboard DAC, you should consider at least getting the digital out modded and maybe a more stable clock for it. Otherwise, you will not get the full bene...
I want a change, but what?
If you read the article, you will find that it is not poor transport design, but the manufacturer taking necessary steps to avoid failing FCC testing. After my mods, the transport can take a 1m cable, but stock transports have very slow risetimes,...
